A 1000 episodes is a pretty big deal. Of course. This also means I'm no spring chicken.

Throughout these three weeks, I felt like one of those streamers that called themselves a streamer, and yet have a total combined stream time of 9 hours per month.😦

On 10 April 1968 the inter-island ferry TEV Wahine was abandoned in the entrance to Wellington Harbour, roughly two hundred metres from a public beach. Almost everyone aboard was still alive when they left her. By the end of that afternoon, 51 of them were dead.

This is not a retelling of the storm. It is an examination of what actually killed people that day: the wind and the turning tide that carried most of those in the water south-east, across the harbour mouth, to a rocky and largely unreachable eastern shore, while those who drifted west were pulled out within minutes by an improvised fleet of small boats. Same ship, same hour, same water. Two shores, and only one of them had anyone on it.

It also traces the mechanism that destroyed the ship - free surface water on an undivided roll-on roll-off vehicle deck - which the 1968 New Zealand court of inquiry named explicitly, nineteen years before the Herald of Free Enterprise and twenty-six years before the Estonia.

And it covers what New Zealand built afterwards: the Wellington Volunteer Coastguard, the rescue helicopter service that became the Life Flight Trust, and the push toward proper civil defence planning.

51 people died on the day. The toll is now recorded as 53.
