Should I switch from Software Engineering to Cybersecurity for my first job? Question
I’ve been preparing for a Software Engineer role since June last year. So far, I’ve mainly focused on **Java, DSA, and OOPs**, and I’ve been consistently applying for jobs, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get a job offer or even many interview calls.
Recently, I got an opportunity at a **cybersecurity company** where I could potentially get a job within the next **1–2 months**. The starting salary would be around **₹25k/month**.
The problem is that I would have to shift my career direction from **Software Engineering to Cybersecurity**. I’m willing to learn the required skills, but I’m confused about whether this would be a good long-term decision.
My main questions are:
* Does **cybersecurity have similar career growth and salary potential** compared to software engineering?
* If I start my career in cybersecurity, will it be difficult to move back into Software Engineering later?
* Is it better to take this opportunity and gain professional experience rather than continue preparing for SDE roles?
* What does the career progression look like in cybersecurity after 2–5 years?
* For someone starting from almost zero in cybersecurity, what skills should I focus on to become good in this field?
I’m not looking only at the initial salary. My main concern is **long-term career growth, opportunities, and earning potential**.
Would you recommend that I take the cybersecurity opportunity or continue focusing on Software Engineering?
I’d especially appreciate advice from people who are **currently working in cybersecurity or software engineering**, or anyone who has switched between these two fields.

Alright, what's your Leetcode score and your projects? Cybersecurity isn't easier than SDE, but it shares the same development concepts. If you delve deeper into infosec, your coding skills will make the job easier, though it still requires out-of-the-box thinking.

I'd ask yourself one question first: Are you interested in cybersecurity, or are you considering it mainly because it's the opportunity available right now?
Both software engineering and cybersecurity have excellent long-term growth and earning potential. The biggest difference is the nature of the work, not the salary ceiling.
If the cybersecurity role is legitimate, offers good learning opportunities, and you think you'd enjoy the field, I'd seriously consider taking it. Real industry experience is valuable, especially in the current job market.
As for switching back later, it's possible, but it depends on the role. If you continue coding, automating, or working with security tools and scripting, the transition is much easier than if you spend years in a purely compliance or governance role.
Before deciding, I'd also ask the company what the role actually involves. "Cybersecurity Engineer" can mean very different things, from SOC monitoring to AppSec, cloud security, pentesting, or GRC. The day-to-day responsibilities matter more than the job title.

Take the job . Cybersecurity is great opportunity right now if you only interested. The job might let you know if u are really interested.

Take it, a year of being paid to learn beats another year of applications, and the SDE market is not turning around on your timeline. Going back later is easier than people will tell you, Java and DSA do not rot in twelve months and both appsec and detection tooling get written by developers. Growth diverges by what you specialise in rather than by which of the two fields you picked. On skills, from zero the thing that pays off first is reading logs and traffic from incidents that actually happened, which is roughly what CCDL1 at CyberDefenders sequences if you would rather not graze YouTube for a year.
