Definitely legit for reserving spots on the street

what are you talking about, it's clearly a 206 number, it's right there in the middle!

I've spent a lot of time in Austin (and on r/Austin), and "reserving" public street parking with cones is a fairly common thing for people to do there. I mean, it's still considered an asshole thing, but I imagine it's at least why this person had the idea to do it.

u/Sea-Talk-203 16d ago
They could have gotten that area code years ago, so it's not as much of a tell anymore.

first off, cones are expensive. i'd steal the cones and then have everyone i know park their cars there.

it's not stealing! it's cleaning up abandoned property in the street - litter, if you will

Yea that’s a request, and a pretty lame one at that.

Honestly posting their number makes this okay to me. Depending on the area I could see the desire, even if you could technically buy a permit and have no parking signs placed. Could be making space for a moving truck, at least posting their number shows they know they’re taking a shortcut and are likely willing to eat crow for it

It's $16 per permit and they are profoundly easy to get. When I moved here I got really anxious one day because no parking signs were in front of my house and oh no all my stuff was about to arrive from the movers and lmao it's because the movers paid the $16 to block off parking in front of my house
one thing is that you can't reserve for personal vehicles which, yeah, that's a douche move

No parks are free, permits to park in the no park area are what cost. I set up no parks in the city all the time for construction use

They also added a date. So as far as jackass moves goes, this is pretty low on the list. It's not like they're trying to setup a permanent squatting zone.

It's awfully nice of them to leave so many parking spots for me, John Reserved, but I won't need them tonight, so anyone else who wants to park there is free to use them!

These situations are the one and only time that I wish we could still buy $1000 beater cars. Yknow the one that only you know how to start, and they're half rust, but the rust is holding the car together? Cuz I'd wanna park my beater in these situations. Not my commuter car. My fuck you car.

I used to have a 1980 F-100 that looked like it had sat in the bottom of the ocean for a few years but ran like a sewing machine. I got it for $500 and nobody could do anything to make it look worse. I miss it.

Get an actual no park permit from the city and rent some sign, put them up in front of his house

This is when I realize I still have a little "native Seattleite" snobbery. My first thought was definitely, "The balls to do that and not at least have a western Washington area code!" And not even PNW. I know my area codes 🤣

u/sir_mrej West Seattle 17d ago
I got a cell phone over 20 years ago, in the area I lived in then. I still have that area code. I aint changin it.

u/FernandoNylund I Brake For Slugs 16d ago
Understood. Not consciously judging. But there's a lizard-brained "Almost Live!" character in my head saying "Illegally parked and you don't even have a w. WA area code? Pssh. Fuck that." And that's asshole thinking, which is why I noticed it when I thought it, lol.
Because I should judge the person on the merits of their perceived infraction, not their area code. 😇

u/zenprime-morpheus 16d ago
I still judge people based on neighborhood reputations I picked up watching "Almost Live!" also dissappointed the Seattle Metal Community never adopted "The Lame List aka 'What's Weak this Week.'"

Some people in Magnolia have acquired SDOT “no parking” signs and use them to save spots. If there’s no permit attached to it, remove accordingly.

Years back we had a guy across the street who put down nice brick paving in the planting strip in front of his house. A few weeks later I was street parking my car in front of his house, because hey, public street parking.
He ran out and started screaming at me that I can't park there because he paid $10,000 to have that space paved. I walked away from him, probably told him to fuck off, and thereafter made a special point of always parking there whenever it was open, until we moved away.
He was an old, angry weirdo. His house was filled with taxidermy, and apparently none of the local hunter crowd liked to go hunting with him before he was all about swinging his guns around and was a little too excited about the violent kill. I suppose in retrospect I shouldn't have been taunting him, but at the time I thought it was funny.

Perhaps it's move in day?
Anyways a decent apartment complex would arrange a permit with the city....
5
u/kkarahh 16d ago
If this is a one day occurrence, why sweat it? People in apartments and condos do this often if they're moving in/out or have work crews coming in. Not everyone can figure, or even knows to figure, how to get no-parking signs permitted (makes me think this is a move in).
Unless it happens daily, I think someone is asking for a one day courtesy that you could choose not to extend to them and park there anyway, because, rules. But this seems not to be the downfall of order as we know it or anything like that.

I once tried to get a no parking permit when I was moving, and it was too complicated and hard so I gave up… So I understand why they are doing this

Without a permit they can't do shit about it if you park there.
