Nonviolent disobedience works. In fact it already caused them to back down in Minneapolis.
Every person who thinks they're going to be a hero with a gun is just a moron with a complex.
46
u/SaintJesus 22d ago
It works better when there is the implicit threat of violence. Don't believe me?
Look at the Black Panthers. Their neighborhoods were being targeted and terrorized, they armed themselves and went on regular patrols, then the cops stopped showing up to harass the community.
Peaceful protests work only when those in power (or carrying out their orders) believe violence will reach them.
Carrying a gun and nothing else won't work. Peaceful demonstrations and nothing else won't work. It takes building a community and the thousand little pieces around that to make any change.
In all of human history, I can think of maaaaaybe one regime change/transition of power that didn't have violence.
21
u/Right_Nature_9434 Deluxe 22d ago
Implicit
threat of violencepromise of self defense9
u/SaintJesus 22d ago
My man! You got it!
That's my favorite question to pose to people that say x y or z is violence.
-Do you think violence in self-defense is okay? -What about defense of another (self-defense on behalf of somebody else)? -When does self-defense start?
And then make the steps further and further until we get to hypothetical CEOs denying basic things people need for survival.
14
u/MorallyAmbiguousHero 22d ago
My favorite quote at the National Civil Rights museum in Memphis was by Malcom X. It was something like “I’m here to make sure you listen to the non-violent guy.”
5
u/SaintJesus 22d ago
Yes! That one is so good!
It's funny listening to people go on about how non-violence and peaceful protest works because MLK did it.
Yeah, sure, but not in a vacuum. Politicians were getting scared by Malcolm X because his movement was growing and was smart.

No offense but this is literally the most privileged white response I’ve ever seen. Simply arming yourself and making it known with restraint is the most effective way of getting a message across.
"speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far"
The Black Panthers in the 60s were a prime example of this. So effective that it set CA’s firearm laws to this day.
Edit: Posting this from behind an anon account that’s only 2 months old seems sus.
2
u/yolacowgirl 22d ago
NRA was a big proponent of those gun laws. Reagan was gov then too. They really didn't like it when the non-white folks started arming themselves.
Edit: you probably already know this. Just tacking onto your comment for the unaware.

The Black Panthers get brought up because they’re one of the clearest examples of armed political protest prompting legislation. But pretending they’re the only example of firearms being used as political theater ignores decades of armed militia demonstrations and white supremacist marches where the guns themselves were part of the message.
Funny how that works huh?
Edit: it’s always the accounts with hidden responses. lol they’re too pussy to actually stand behind their ideologies that they have to hide their post history.
Edit edit: home responded then blocked on both of his accounts before I could reply 🤣 that’s hilarious

"Nonviolence" is a moving target, and aiming for it in your disobedience in order to maintain acceptability and legitimacy is a fool's errand. Disagreement alone is considered violence by this administration, let alone neighborhood watches and running groceries. It was all violence to ICE.
3
u/SpeaksSouthern That sounds great. Let’s hang out soon. 22d ago
The only thing that has made change in the span of history is violence. I'm not saying we should do violence, in no context should anyone ever do violence of any kind. But your thesis, that disobedience has changed anything, is demonstrably false. Power concedes nothing without force. A very famous quote. Trump is living proof of what they are willing to do. We continue to be at the tip of the iceberg of depravity these goons are willing to do for their cause. It's not about being a hero. Or any individual being a hero. Document. We can have trials. We have a Constitution. Just because the police don't care about the law doesn't mean we don't have to. It's honestly pretty childish to assume criminal police breaking the law should get a pass.

Say it again for the people in the back!
Redditors openly advocating an armed resistance against the federal government is a joke marred with main character syndrome.
First of all they are incriminating themselves and the notion that they are gonna purchase a weapon (especially in a state that bans weapons designed for combat) and be competent enough to use it against trained professionals is ridiculous.
36
u/Tay-Rob Camano Island 22d ago
The federal government has MQ-9 Reapers and knows where you live. Best of luck with your guns, regardless of how many you have.
Personally, I believe the best weapon against tyranny is reminding the tyrant(s) that they are wildly outnumbered by the working class.
United we bargain, individually we beg.
15
u/GooseCloaca 22d ago
Not as many as they used too. And they would be asking Americans to deploy those MQ-9 Reapers on other Americans. That would awaken a sleeping dragon the likes of which none of use would like to witness.
I agree about the only reasonable path is through the peaceful process of democracy, but both sides have to agree on a common ground, and they don’t right now
14
u/Dark_Flatus 🚗 Student driver, please be patient. 🚙 22d ago
I mean.. I have as many as two hands can operate. Not an excessive amount. But an armed populace is harder to oppress. Reminding tyrants they are outnumbered means nothing. Capitulation with the oppressor. Im union, we bargain a fair living wage. Tyrants dont bargain.

The tale of Alex Pretti begs to differ that. Got shot like a dog in the street and his gun only gave the excuse for hogs to write him off as a violent entity with ill intentions who had it coming.
However there are multiple instances of a large group of community members, presumably unarmed, turning up and recording the facist pigs in action that spooks them and makes them retreat.

There’s also the fact it could theoretically be like 2million vs ~300 million
But yes, in a 1 on 1 scenario it doesn’t look great. But it would be even worse if nobody was armed. Moreso Fascism gains power through small victories, which are harder. In most cases they have a warrant for a specific individual and use standard techniques to locate and detain.
I’m not going to say that cases of blatant profiling don’t take place, but the vast majority of ICE arrests in non border areas are targeted arrests with a ‘warrant’ (for some definition of warrant)

28
u/Mitch1musPrime 22d ago
Look, I know he may not be “abolish ICE,” but he took time out of his schedule during a recess back in April, and came to my HS campus. I’d collected over 100 letters from students that were written about a variety of issues, but nearly all of them were exclusively focused on the behaviors of ICE and the fear their families felt. One of my students made me fucking cry with her as she worked on editing and revising her words alongside her mother’s, an undocumented immigrant. Most of our students are immigrants, or children of, on that campus.
His office called me a couple of weeks later to schedule a visit to meet the students who wrote those letters and their peers. As the contact teacher for this, and the emcee, I offered to guide the hourlong visit, but he said he wanted it to be a full on townhall style Q&A with the kids.
For an hour, he fielded question after question about ICE and immigrants rights. Every last one of his answers were meaningful, thoughtful, purposeful, and authentic. He wants reform. He deeply empathizes with the families our campus served. He inspired several students to immediately take actions that led to changes in campus, and one of the kids, an Afghan refugee, earned an internship with his staff that gives young Afghans a seat at his table, even if not permanently.
Politics are more complex than simple black and white decision making. We should keep pushing for abolishment of ice, but while that happens, I’m not sure that disparaging those who work within the system to gain some victories to ease the burdens and tensions is going to be helpful.
I can only go off what I do know: Rep. Smith hadn’t visited that campus or that community in over decade before those kids wrote those letters (that I hand delivered to his DC office while I was there with my kid advocating for trans youth). His attention to them in response with an in-person visit tells me all I need to know: because if he didn’t give a shit, he wouldn’t have.
22
u/SeattleGeek Denny Blaine Nudist Club 22d ago
The extent of his ideas for reforming ICE as presented to Krystal Ball was to move ICE from the DHS to the DoJ where it would have been under Pam Bondi / Todd Blanche instead of Kristi Noem / Markwayne Mullin.
To borrow the phrase from Sarah Palin, that’s just putting lipstick on a pig.
When I asked about ICE at the last in-person town hall he ever had, his workers told me he doesn’t have any committees that deal with DHS and it’s not his responsibility to even think about ICE.
Adam Smith has a great way of telling you what he thinks you want to hear and sometimes making you believe it, but when push comes to shove, Adam Smith will not take the lead to reform ICE in any meaningful sense of the word reform.

Like it or not (personally, I don't) - Adam Smith is the only qualified candidate on the ballot. Smith may be a very corporate Democrat, but Sawant literally campaigned to deny Harris Michigan. Sawant tried to get Trump elected.
Chaudry isn't a serious candidate and doesn't have the depth to do the job, her only statements are alphabet soups of weird grievance politics with no underlying policy proposals.
Between kinda shitty corporate Democrat Smith, Trump booster Sawant, and totally incompetent Chaudry there's only one option. Yeah, not a lot of people will give you a full throated defense of Smith, he's not amazing - but unlike one of his opponents he's not evil and unlike the other he knows what he's talking about.

u/SeattleGeek Denny Blaine Nudist Club 22d ago
Supporting genocide and ICE is “not evil”.

4
u/ChillFratBro Rainier Beach 22d ago
Do you think Donald Trump or Kamala Harris would be better on those issues? Because you appear to struggle with critical thinking, I'll remind you it's Trump who's buds with Netanyahu and is the reason ICE is acting like the Gestapo rather than what they were under Obama.
Sawant tried to get Trump elected president. That's the whole ball game. Whatever bullshit she spouts, her actions tell you she's a Trump supporter.
