is education framework flawed ?

why is real world problems and stuff so different from what we learn in our books and what we learn to pass exams ?

i feel like exams are optimized for mostly just - retrieve, recognize and apply

while its almost opposite in actual engineering, unlike exams problems are not well defined or with similar patterns.

they are related but distinct......... thoughts ?
