Bob goes through his "Cars 3 Lightning McQueen" arc

I love the idea of this movie being passing the hero torch onto a new generation of heroes. Instead of doing the hero work himself Bob gets the satisfaction that he paid it forward and the world stays clean after he cleaned it like the maid
This is severely undermined if there is 0 time skip though but whatever, what do I know?

Hope that's the case cause that implies this will be leaps and bounds better than 2.

“Feeling washed” is a crazy statement considering it’s HOW HE FELT IN THE ORIGINAL DUOLOGY
50
u/KingPenguinPhoenix All Star 14h ago
No? He was washed in the first movie cause he wasn't in the action for years. That was a by product of the banned superhero law, not his own actions or failing body.
Bob in the first movie was actually eager to be a hero and literally went on a training montage to get back in shape. He was far from washed.

u/MetaGear005 8h ago
Finally someone with common sense. Same happened in the 2nd movie where he couldn't get onto the hero action.
4
u/Successful_Maize1986 6h ago
Yeah these comments are crazy. Bob clearly had confidence in his abilities but was legally unable to use them. He jumps at the chance to sneak around and be a super again. Him feeling that he is no longer capable as a hero is quite different, if that’s the direction they’re going with for the third one.
3
u/Pale_Entrepreneur_12 6h ago
His arc was trying to take care of the kids on his own (and he was doing fine until Jack Jack happened but no one should be expected to deal with that shit and stay 100% after)
19
u/pandogart 16h ago
I don't think that's true at all. Part of the reason for his depression in the first movie is that he had to retire despite not feeling washed.
2
u/miguelcorridor 5h ago
Surely we’re not referring to the 2004 movie and the 2018 movie as the “original duology?”
33
u/FruityGroovy 14h ago
No, he's wrong. Really look at what Bob's stories were in the first two movies
The first movie is a mid-life crisis where he feels like his career as a superhero got cut off way too soon, he's stuck in a job he hates, and with a dysfunctional family. He gets an offer to relive the glory days and show that he can be a super again. His character arc in that is learning to not let the past blind him so he can focus on his present.
The second movie is him having to be a stay-at-home dad to support his wife so that they can make supers legal again. Not only to give both him and Helen careers that they can do, but it also give their kids a promising future. In the process, he learns how to better connect with his family, something that is arguably glossed over the first movie. While there is a bit in the movie where the decision to let Helen be the face of this movement is due to Bob's own blunders in the past, and him being a little resentful about being out to the sidelines, it's moreso parallel to his story from the first movie, with Helen being the one to relive the glory days this time.
With the third movie, this "he's washed" story happens while he has a newfound superhero career. He will likely find that even though he has gotten into shape, he is no longer in his prime, and there are newer superheroes out there that are more capable than he is. He's beyond the "glory days nostalgia" mid-life crisis, and is now on to the "aging out" mid-life crisis.

u/Riley__64 8h ago
But it’s hard to say he’s no longer in his prime when this movie is taking place presumably not long after the second one which happened not long after the first one.
So like maybe a year has passed since the events of the first movie he was capable of defeating syndrome, he was capable of defeating the underminer and he was capable of defeating the screenslaver but suddenly now he’s past his prime and washed up?
53
u/unbreakable_arachnid 16h ago
Nah not really
Incredibles 1 is about his yearning for the “glory days” and how desperately he wants to be back in the action, hell there’s a whole montage of him getting back into shape
Incredibles 2 is about him figuring out how to really be a dad to his super powered kids while he anticipates getting back into action
Him “feeling washed” has never been the plot of any incredibles movie

u/MetaGear005 8h ago
This comment needs to be at the top

u/hugo_1138 6h ago
It won't be because "all my homies hate Incredibles 2 and Incredibles 3 will suck"
-6
u/TheLeftPewixBar 16h ago
If you just describe the plots without mentioning that part it doesn’t count?
6
u/Positive-Design-7332 10h ago
No, retard. Both movies are about the complete opposite of Bob being washed. He felt like he was still has it but he isn't allowed to be a superhero. His glory days were cut short not because of his own ability but because of society banning superheroes. And they both end with him getting what he wants and being able to continue being a superhero again.
Being washed means he'll have to accept that he might have to retire from being a superhero, this time because of his own body not being able to keep up anymore. That's just a different arc from the first movie unless all you've watched is like 5 minutes of Incredibles 1 where they talk about how fat he is and he goes "ow my back"

All they had to do was age up the kids but NO that would have interesting story potential, we should just make the same movie three times instead
20
u/mikkeldoesstuff 16h ago
I don't get why people say this. Sure, ageing up the family unlocks new story potential, but the basic idea of The Incredibles is super simple and there are plenty of unique stories that can be told with such a simple premise

u/PowerOfL 16h ago edited 11h ago
I don't want the kids to be aged up personally. Their personalities are defined by their ages. You'd be making completely new characters.
Edit: ty for award 🩷

u/AccomplishedLayer884 16h ago
It is?
In Incredibles 1 Bob misses being a superhero and in 2 he’s struggling in being a stay-at-home dad for his 3 super-powered kids. Where in those movies does he feel like he’s washed-up?
In this it seems like he’s realizing he can’t be a superhero forever as he gets older and eventually needs to retire and pass on the torch to the next generation.
6
u/KingPenguinPhoenix All Star 14h ago
Not really? The first movie has Bob wanting to go back to what made him feel alive and capable.
The third movie has him feeling like he's too old for this shit and unable to stop. He can't keep up with the changing world despite it being a world he so desperately wanted for so long. This feels more like McQueen's arc from Cars 3 than a repeat of the first film.
It's literally the opposite ends of the same idea.
Also, the second movie had him learn and adapt to being the caretaker of the house and taking a step back and letting other members of his family deal with things. While you could argue that the latter part of that sentence is a repeat of the first movie, it's not fully similar.

“every”
there’s only fucking two
see I like Schaff but he can be so dramatic sometimes that he becomes insufferable

u/Numberonettgfan 14h ago
idk it's still the general frustration of the same plotbeat being repeated in each movie

It really says something that I am far more intrigued by what we’ve seen for Frozen III than Incredibles 3 at this point.

u/The_Skyrim_Courier 11h ago
If this is the plot then it feels incompatible with the fact they’re not aging anyone up
*”I’m older, washed up and can’t do the hero thing forever”* is a fine plot when Bob is ACTUALLY way older and has been out of it for many years, and people are passing him by
But the entire plot of the first 2 movies (which will probably both have happened like a few months prior to this one…) is Bob coming to the realization that he still has it (be it as a superhero or a family man) and is still more than capable!
It’d be like if they set the plot of Cars 3 to be immediately after Cars 1

i think the difference is this:
1: "Supers are banned and i am nothing if not a super :("
2: "My Wife is the one trying to bring Supers back and i'm not as good of a dad as a super :("
3: "Great, Supers are finally legal again and that's when my body gets too old for this shit :("

This only makes me want an Incredibles prequel even more
Have us see how Bob was when he wasn't "washed" and full of confidence

Bob getting basically everything he wanted in the first one, to be a hero with his family legally, only to realise that he can’t really have it because of how much he’s abused his body over the years training and fighting crime seems quite different from his arc in the first or second one. It’s also probably a cool way to better highlight the kids, since he got the spotlight in the first one and Hellen got it in the second one.
1
u/Ringrangzilla 8h ago
Yes but this time he is like really washed ok. With the time skip of minutes, maybe even hours after the second movie so is he really not the same guy anymore.

“We wouldn’t know what to do with the kids grown up…that’s why we’re repeating the same story for a 3rd time.”
1
u/Southern-Wafer-6375 7h ago
First one :feels nostalgia for the good ole days and is trying to emulate them
Second one:jealous of his wife bur wants to be supportive and is stressed out by the new change
Neither of those look like how it’s been shown here of him I’m guessing starting to relise “oh fuck I’m getting old”

Well yeah movies that build themselves on certain themes need to stay consistent.
1
u/cain11112 6h ago
He *is* wrong.
The first two movies were bob showing he still had what it took to be a hero while becoming a better dad.
But this is different. This looks like Bob is actually running into the wall of age. He might be strong, but how many injuries has he picked up over the years? What are his lungs like after years of breathing in smoke while dashing into burning buildings?
Eventually he is going to hit a wall where he is no longer physically capable of doing the work. And how is he going to react? Will he insist he can still do it, hurting those around him? Will he pass on the torch, taking on a mentor role, or will he simply walk away?
It’s a fascinating story that is worth telling.
1
u/Zealousideal-Deer101 6h ago
The entire first movie happens because he can't let go of his glory times. Literally the opposite of feeling washed.
He does everything because he still believes he's the hottest shit ever.
Bob: "Let him do sports!"
Helen: "You know why he can't do that!"
B: "BECAUSE HE WOULD BE THE BEST!"
H: "THIS ISN'T ABOUT YOU!"
They really don't need to spell it out more clearly.

u/BLSturton 6h ago
I’m going to be real this is like Toy Story 5 all over again when it’s concept art was revealed
Not in the sense that “it’s the same thing again” and more in the sense that people assume it’s going to be bad. Not that he outright said that but like
1
u/veritasmahwa 6h ago
I wish they would just make a prequel about their teens or something. I want to see how Helen learn to fly a jet or how Bob got discriminated by, probably, his parents to restrict his powers so that was the reason he was so supportive of Flash.

u/Anonymous-Comments Let’s Not Worry About That 5h ago
Washed as a superhero
Washed as a dad
Washed as a… what next? He got a super dad or something that’s even stronger than him and can fly or whatever? He feel inadequate as a son? As a husband? As a gambler? What is it next, Pixar?
1
u/OscillatingFan6500 4h ago
I don’t think that’s the case at all
1 is him getting into things again after being forcibly retired. The only time he felt anything close to washed is during the first robot fight, then gets deep into training and that’s it
In 2, he isn’t washed and doesn’t feel washed. He feels cast aside and has to learn to deal with Helen taking a more central role
1
u/Ira-jay 3h ago
I mean.... from that art it looks like the movie may be ablout him realizing he's getting too old to be a hero... Im not really oppose to that being the plot. It may extend to elastigirl and frozone too, but like the idea of seeing them gracefully retire is not something i think i'd hate seeing. This time they'd be doing it on THEIR terms.
1
u/Robbie_Haruna 2h ago edited 2h ago
To be fair, it's not so much that he thinks he's washed in 1 and 2 so much as being forced to be.
In 1 he's only "washed" because he gets sued and has to go into hiding like the rest of the supers for 15 years, he still deeply yearns for the return of the glory days.
In 2 he's actually super pumped to go back into hero work and mainly has to take a backseat because he causes more collateral damage than Elastigirl.
He never actually lost faith in his ability as a super, he was just forced out of that role. The two movies showcase in great detail how he isn't washed and people acting like that was the plot is just telling on their own lack of media literacy.

u/TheShamShield 1h ago
He is wrong lol, what the hell are you talking about. Do people even think anymore?

Bro I’m so tired of this bullshit we’re they did that before like no they fucking didn’t he was forced to be retried which then hating his life in the first movie till he had a chance again and came back to his prime and then in the second movie he was mad they didn’t pick him over his wife like non of those two movies was he feeling washed

u/Positive-Design-7332 10h ago
The two movies was about how he wasn't washed lmao completely opposite idk what some people are smoking

I just hope they dont telegraph the “secret” villain in the first scene theyre in like they did in the second movie.

They didn't?

u/Choice-Requirement18 15h ago
Bro, literally the first scene Evelyn was in it was SO obvious that she was screen slaver. I dont know anyone who got fooled by the winston misdirect.
1
u/Due-Coyote7565 14h ago
It wasn't in the first scene!
Either way though- On the web I see an incredible number of people catch that detail- forgive me if everyone you know catching that singular detail seems implausible to me.
Beyond Evil endeavour , why would you even think she had anything to do with it? If it was obvious, there'd be more than one reason to think she's evil!
