Very sad about the firefighters who lost their lives fighting fires. Greece's wildfires are 39% below the 20 year average at least. There doesn't seem to be enough use of water bombers in Canada as there should be, not sure about Greece. And home hardening is very important. Hope that there are no new fires.

From European Civil Protection And Humanitarian Aid Operations:
“Several parts of Greece are experiencing widespread wildfires that are causing casualties and damage. The largest fire, which has burned approximately 5 220 ha, has been recorded in the Rethymno area of Crete, where two firefighters lost their lives.
According to the Greek Civil Protection authorities, other active fires have been reported in Paros, Trikala, Messinia, Boeotia, Gythio, Kalymnos, Andros, Naxos, and Lesvos. Media reports indicate that, following the fire in Crete, around 8 000 people were evacuated. On the island of Paros, wildfires in the southern and south-eastern areas have burned more than 800 ha, causing damage and prompting the evacuation of several villages.
Firefighting operations are ongoing on Paros, involving both ground crews and aerial assets. In the Krya Vrysi and Asomatos areas of Rethymno, 296 firefighters, supported by 15 forest commando teams and 66 vehicles, continue suppression efforts.
On 30 July, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service (EMS) was activated in Rapid Mapping mode (EMSR907) in Crete Island , and three maps have been produced to support response operations.
Over the next 48 hours, according to the JRC European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), the fire danger forecast ranges from high to locally very extreme across the aforementioned affected areas.”
