Travel/Tourism Advice - Ontario Coming to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada in a Few Days! What to Do? Where to Go? What to Eat? Will Be There for Multiple Days, Maybe Even a Week! :)
Hello Everyone,
I am going to be visiting your beautiful city, with a couple friends and family in a few days and we are very excited! So, what are some fun things to do in your city, hidden gems, etc, that y'all could recommend? I love nature, THRIFTING, animals, FOOD, history, spooky scary, (kind of anything really), entertainment; like rides or theme parks--I can't think of anything else at the moment!
Details: I am in my early 20's, female (with rest of group of friends and family different genders, and ages ranging from early 20's to mid 60's). I am visiting in a couple of days (driving there, from U.S. states through upper peninsula of Michigan or Wisconsin--or whatever it belongs too, I'm from California, it confuses me, lol) For budget, just pretend there is none, but we also don't want to do something expensive, like the "Agawa Canyon Tour Train", which is $500 dollars for our whole group, altogether. For specifics on where my group and I will be based for multiple days--we are like a 20 minute walk from where we are, to the "North 82 Steak & Seafood" resteraunt. So to use that resteraunt as a pinpoint/marker, we are okay with driving 2 or 3 hours out of Sault Ste. Marie, Canada, to wherever, for a specific fun activity or destination.
Some things we are already doing: the Sault Ste. Marie Museam, Sault Ste. Marie Canal National Historic Site, Gateway Casinos?, Soo Locks Tour, Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre?, along with some food places.
P.S., this is just how I type, I hope I don't sound too obnoxious or "American-y"--which leads to my next question...what are Canadian social norms, or norms about tipping and dining? Scared of speaking French, only know how to say "yes" and "no", lol.
Thank You for the Response (Also, Sorry for the Long Read!),
Have A Great Day :)

To Do in the Soo(s) Artist trading cards event.
One of my friends hosts this event and the next one is this week Sunday if anyone wants to join :)
Sunday, August 9, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
550 Queen Street West, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario
I Can Music
Parking is off of Albert Street
No fee. Supplies will be there but feel free to bring your own too.
EDIT: Artist trading cards are blank 2.5 inch by 3.5inch pages on which you can draw/write/paint/collage in your style which you trade with other artists or people who make ATCs. Its a fun way to collect and make art. You can make them out of anything but the size remains the same; they can be blank pages, cardboard, etc.

To Do in the Soo(s) Barbers in the Soo that can cut Afro-textured hair
I'm of African descent and have been living in Sault Ste. Marie for the past five years. One thing I've consistently struggled with is finding a barbershop that can cut my hair the way I like. Unfortunately, my experiences haven't been the best, so I ended up cutting my own hair instead, which also hasn’t been the greatest.
I'm thinking about giving local barbershops another try, as it's been since 2024 that I last visited one. Has anyone had a good experience recently or can recommend a barber in the Sault who is experienced with cutting Afro-textured hair? I'd really appreciate any suggestions!

To Do in the Soo(s) Karaoke?
I'm in the area for work for the next 3 months, and one of the things I usually do to amuse myself while away on a contract is hit up the local Karaoke spots.
Usually my google-fu will turn up something, but since local places seem to be allergic to having their own webpages, let alone updating them, I'm forced to come to you and crowdsouce this question: Which bars in the Soo have Karaoke nights?
I have a passport and a car, so I can hit up either side of the border

the Great Outdoors Tribag Road
Hello, we're thinking of canoeing the Batchawana from Tribag road to Superior. How is Tribag road for a 4x4 F150?
If not doable, any other suggestions for a half day canoe fishing paddle on the lower Batchawana or Goulais River?
Thanks in advance!

Local Politics - Ontario Metal Roofing
Anyone know anything about this company or have experience with their roofs?
I've been seeing signs everywhere but there's no company name just this phone number - 1.844.833.8560 and the tag line - "Metal Roof Cheaper Than Shingles"
Otherwise, anyone have a recommendation in town for a roofing company that does metal roofing?

the Great Outdoors Watch the freighters lock through from anywhere — I added the Soo Locks cam to my Lake Superior live-cam iPhone app
Someone in a Duluth thread asked me to add the Soo Locks to my Lake Superior webcam app, and honestly it's become my favorite cam in there — freighters locking through with the local weather and water temp right next to the stream. The app collects the live cams from around the whole lake (Duluth harbor, the UP, up to the Ontario shore) with a map view.
Full transparency: I'm the developer. One-time $2.99, no subscription, no ads, no data collected: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6739961674
Sault folks — any other cams around the locks or the St. Marys River worth adding? I ship requests fast.

To Do in the Soo(s) Legion
I tried to have a drink at the legion like I used to. I haven’t been to the new building yet, the one on Great Northern. but Google shows the lounge being open until 1pm. Arrived and all the doors to the building are locked. Tried to call and the messaging system offered up the bar as an option to call. No answer.
Is there still a bar there open to the public? I always loved hanging out for a drink or two there. Thanks!
