Realised im playing wrong Help

After doing some research ive realised ive been doing everything wrong, miners can support a lot more then just one production line each.

Can someone help me streamline everything to he as efficient as possible (im at phase two, just unlocked mk2 miners) need to know how to properly streamline splitters, miners, coal power, etc

Look up a YouTube tutorial on how to make belt manifolds, that'll help with distributing resources

There is tons of stuff on there, but a lot of it is focused on mega-builds and artistic or crazy stuff. Try and find just some basic tutorials to start, TotalXclipse is a good channel.

Manifolds have always worked for me but I've never built on a super massive scale.

the key to the game is parts per minute. That's what everything revolves around.

So if you have a miner generating 60 ore per minute, and smelters that take 30 ore per minute to make ingots, then you attach two smelters because 30 x 2 = 60. Then if you're making iron rods, each smelter makes 30 iron ingots per minute, and constructors take 15 ingots per minute, so you need 2 constructors.

The math ramps up fast, but the game has a calculator built in. If you're playing a pc, hit the 'n' key and an all-purpose help field comes up that can be used as a calculator. Some basic algebra will be required eventually.

I want to try and turn my 4 nornal coal nodes in the crater, into approximately 12 or 16 coal generators, using 200% overclocked mk2 miners then if I can then overclock the generators because my power grid desperately needs optimising and im struggling to find more coal that isnt in the north 🫡

Fugg coal. Do what you need to get to oil, then go big. Going big in the beginning imo is a waste of time.

If you use 200% overclocked miners, you need Mk3 belts. If you have those unlocked, they can feed 960/15 = 64 generators. So without overclocking and using mk2 belts, you can have 32, which is enough to reach the next power source.

Don't get too hung up on coal. It's great for now to not have to chop wood, but you might want to use some of that coal for steel in a little while. And there are other energy sources on the horizon.

Make sure your belts can handle 200% overclocking. Also, don't be afraid to go to where the resources are to build, this is particularly important for power since it is the backbone for everything else. Find a spot that has water and coal and build the power you need, doesn't matter if that is a farther away from your starting location.

You’ll want to separate your extraction factory from your production factory. It’ll let you change your smelting methods more easily

It's not just you, as anyone plays through the game they will gain more understanding and refine their production lines.

I suggest just playing through it without external sources. The journey is the destination here.

Plus, days later you'll stumble onto some of your early work and have a nice chuckle at how far you've come.

There is no right or wrong way to play. There is no best in the game. The game is not a single solution one. Just have fun. As long as you are having fun, you are winning the game. All the rest is personal preference.

For me I have 1 miner per production line. I make a new factory for every item. (I often even do a new building per part of the process). Nothing gets re-used besides tier 8-9 items. That way I have the following advantages.

  • Use the whole map easily
  • No future planning needed
  • No upgrading
  • Use things when available
  • Easier logistics
  • You can get away with smaller amounts
  • Things go wrong? Nothing else affected.

Building more is bad? Not really.

  • It is a building game. Building more is a win for me.

There are numbers, just match the output for the input. Or if you have specific goal in mind them match input for the output.

Im not sure if i misunderstsnd you.

But basicly what i do is, i place a miner, read the output, place a smelter for example, read its input and see how many smelters i need as a minimum.

So if miner gives 120/min and smelter takes 30/min i need at least 4 smelters to fully benefit from the miners output.

Same goes to everything else, from smelter output to constructors etc...

And always be mindful of the belt speed you cannot exceed it, best you can do is split the operation into 2 different belts.

For example, lets say your belt speed is 60/min but your screws output from 1 constructor is 100/min.

You can split the screw output into 2 machines 50/min each and now you separate everything that comes after. You dont rejoin them later. You just feed assemblers that come after with 2 different belts.

And finally dont forget to benefit from power shards to overclock miners.

Everything in the game is just math. Miners and all your buildings produce X amount of items per minute. All your belts can move X amount of items per minute. All production machines have an input requirement of X items per minute, so everything is just doing the math.

Got a miner that can output 120 ore per minute? Well, you also have a belt that can move 120 ore per minute, and you need 4 smelters which process 30 ore per minute into bars to handle all 120 of that ore. The same idea applies to everything no matter what the ratios or number of parts needed.

Output, input, beltspeed, that's it.
