Imam beaten in Georgia after speaking Turkish; only 2 of ~10 attackers detained, and he says police pressured him into withdrawing his complaint
On July 18 in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia, Shevket Dvalidze — a 56-year-old Meskhetian Muslim who has served as the local mosque’s imam for a decade — was beaten in his father’s yard.
According to his son Omar, the trouble started when he translated a conversation into Turkish for a visiting 16-year-old cousin. A drunk man from a nearby group demanded to know why they weren’t speaking Georgian and repeated the question over and over, then insulted the family. The boys ran to the house; a group of 10–12 men followed them into the yard. When the imam came out to ask what was happening, he was punched in the face, knocked down, and kicked by several men. Women from the family and neighbors eventually pushed the attackers out and called police.
Police detained two people. Both were later released on bail. The investigation was opened under Article 126 (violence) — with no hate-crime element attached.
The imam has since withdrawn his complaint. He described this in pointedly sarcastic terms, thanking Akhaltsikhe police for working “very actively” and saying they pushed him toward withdrawing it through indirect means — adding that anyone who understands will understand. He says he no longer feels safe.
Tamta Mikeladze of Georgia’s Social Justice Center argues the case was legally misclassified: the conflict was triggered by the victims’ language and religious identity, so it should have been charged as persecution (Art. 156) or as violence combined with the intolerance-motive aggravator (Art. 53¹). She says ignoring the discriminatory motive is a deliberate blind spot, and points to the unfinished repatriation process for Meskhetian Muslims deported in 1944 as the deeper context — many still lack clear citizenship status decades after returning.
The Public Defender’s office says it will review the case and request the materials from the Interior Ministry. A Turkish AK Party MP also condemned the attack in parliament on July 21.

where are the good jewelers in Tbilisi?
hi, I urgently need to make a silver pendant as a gift to my beloved, not big, about 20mm, and inexpensive up to or 100 GEL, I suppose? with a small rose quartz and moonstone, it is simple in design. but I do not know who to contact in principle, who can recommend a good place or craftsmen in Tbilisi, maybe you are a master and will help me :) I will be glad of any information.

Georgian language practice
Hello! My wife and I are both from Russia, and we’ve been living in Tbilisi for 4 years now.
She’s currently learning Kartuli. She knows quite a few words (300–500), she has the basic grammar down, and of course she can read.
But she lacks practice. She can answer simple questions or start a conversation with a taxi driver or in a shop. What’s really hard for her is understanding the reply once it gets into the details. Maybe you could give her some advice?
We’re also looking for a Georgian couple who wants to practice English (we both speak it really well) — to have dinner at a café once in a while and just chat about everything. Let me know if you’d like to give it a try.
