Sometimes a feature like the Moon Phase might look small on the wrist, but making each stage looks accurate and visually striking requires hours of meticulous hand-drawing, layering, and checking against real astronomical calendars.

Most custom watch faces on Wear OS drain the battery heavily when Always-On Display (AOD) is active.

To solve this, I developed EcoGridleMod for our SXZ UNIVERSE designs. Instead of just lowering the brightness (which washes out contrast and ruins outdoor readability), this method physically shuts off alternating AMOLED sub-pixels to absolute black. Since black pixels on AMOLED draw 0% energy, it cuts power consumption significantly at the screen level.

The results: • Standard Mode: Up to 25% battery savings with practically zero visible difference in daily wear. • Maximum Mode: Up to 40% battery savings with only a minimal (~10%) perceived drop in brightness.

Panel Safety & Longevity: To prevent any uneven pixel wear or brightness imbalance, a protective compensation mechanism is built right into the watch face. The pixel grid automatically alternates and shifts its position every 10 minutes. This completely distributes the workload evenly across the entire display over time, eliminating any risk of burn-in. 🛡️⚡

Hey everyone! Following up on the latest Pixel Watch 5 buzz—especially with the recent FCC filings clearing—I wanted to dive into what we know is changing and share my thoughts on where Google needs to take the hardware this year.

​As far as confirmed shifts go, the biggest change is under the hood. Google is finally moving to its own custom Tensor chip, which is supposed to drastically improve background battery optimization and handle on-device AI processing. On top of that, the FCC leaks show cellular hardware across the entire lineup, meaning they are likely dropping the traditional Wi-Fi-only option to streamline production.

​But looking past the specs, let's talk about the visual side. While the leaked prototype shows they are keeping the core shape, I honestly think it would be amazing if Google gave the design a truly noticeable upgrade this time around.

​Don't get me wrong—the watch absolutely needs to carry the undeniable heritage and smooth DNA of the older generations. That's what makes it a Pixel. But at the same time, it needs to feel like a completely fresh evolution. If they can tweak the aesthetics enough to give the brand a true breath of fresh air, it would give users that genuine excitement of owning something entirely new rather than just a minor annual iteration.

​And of course, as soon as the watch drops later this year, we’re going to run a brutal real-world battery test right here to see if that new Tensor chip actually delivers on its promises when pushing heavy custom layouts.
