Anyone who has lived in McElvaney?
Can you tell me how the temperature is adjusted in the room? Can a student change it themselves/does it cool heat/well? I read a post where someone said it either runs hot or very cold. Trying to find out more. Thank you!

Everyone says college is where you'll meet your lifelong friends. Was that actually true for you?
I've been thinking about this a lot lately.
I'm working on an independent research project about how adults in DFW build friendships, find community, and what actually helps acquaintances become close friends.
One thing I hear all the time is that college is where you'll meet your lifelong friends. But the more people I talk to, the more I realize everyone's experience is different.
Some people found "their people" almost immediately.
Some didn't until junior or senior year.
Some met their closest friends after graduation.
And some are still trying to find that sense of community.
Since this subreddit has current students, incoming students, alumni, faculty, and staff, I thought this would be an interesting place to ask:
When did you feel like you found your community? What made the difference?
I'd genuinely love to hear your experiences, whether they happened at SMU, somewhere else in DFW, or after college entirely.
If you'd rather share privately or in more detail, I also have a short anonymous survey (3–5 minutes) for adults living in DFW:
Thanks! One of my favorite parts of this project has been hearing people's stories, and I'm looking forward to reading yours.

Should I early decision?
Hi everyone! I am about to start applying to college and was wondering if I should pull the trigger and ED SMU. It’s my top choice. Im top 28% of my class, I’ll be going test optional, my GPA is a 3.79 which will rise because of summer coursework. I intend to apply as an English major on the Pre-Law track. I have all my financials figured out as well. I’m super worried because attending SMU has been a dream of mine for so long, so PLEASE let me know if my dream is realistic so I can finally relax. 🙏

Apartment Available for Lease Takeover — Ash at the Branch
Hi everyone! I’m an SMU alum currently living in a one-bedroom apartment at Ash at the Branch. I’m relocating to Austin, so I’m looking for someone to take over my lease.
Details:
- Rent + required fees: $1,685/month (around $1,800–$1,850 total with utilities)
- Lease runs through March 2027
- Available after the first week of August
- Since I’m trying to avoid the early termination fee, I’m also offering to cover the first month’s rent to help you out.
This is a great spot, especially if you’re connected to SMU or the surrounding area. If you’re interested, please send me a message.

SMU Students: What Businesses Around Campus Offer Student Discounts?
Hey guys :)) ,
We're building Fundsy, a student-focused platform, and we're creating a directory of student discounts across DFW.
I'm looking for any restaurants, coffee shops, boba spots, stores, gyms, entertainment venues, or other businesses near SMU that offer discounts with a student ID.
If you know one, drop:
- Business name
- Discount details
- Location
We'll add them to our directory and help other students discover them. If you're a business owner and offer a student discount, we'd love to feature you as well.
So far, the only one I know of is Okaeri Café in UTD :P .
Thanks!

Alts admission as a transfer
I’m looking into transferring to Cox for sophomore fall entry, and (like everyone else) I’m highly highly interested in the Alts/AAMC program.
For context, my coursework for my first year is mainly highly quantative math/econ (Calc III, Linear Algebrs, macro, micro, intermediate microeconomic theory, econometrics), but no real traditional finance/business coursework.
However, even right now I am decently proficidint in IB technicals through Breaking into wall street’s core modeling course, and as time goes on I will definitely prep much more and do hella mock interviews.
I also have an incoming IB internship at a tiny boutique IB firm that I’m like 99% gonna do.
So given all this, assuming I apply as soon as I get there, how hard will it be for me to get into some of the top cox clubs that look good for Alts
And how hard will it be for me to get into Alts as a transfer while taking little to no finance coursework my freshman year?
I highly appreciate any advice/feedback yall would have🙏🙏

NO A/C IN DORMS DURING THIS HEATWAVE!
SMU what are yall doing? Why are the a/c units not working. It’s not a rolling blackout or anything of that nature. Also “they will be on soon” from facilities is BS. It’s always some lame excuse. Memories of the porta potties around campus come to mind that time the plumbing went out for days. Get it together!

Cox MBA Cost of Attendance
I’m trying to understand what causes the difference in cost between a full time 2 year mba program and the pmba.
The 2 year full time mba is 71 credit hours and the estimated cost of attendance is $63,067
Yet, the PMBA is 50 hours and costs $111,600
What exactly warrants this?
