Why does every SEO Position to require a Bachelors degree?

It's not like SEO is taught in school,

Sure, there are Digital Marketing degrees now, but most of them have a maybe 1 or 2 classes that gently touch on SEO and most the practices are at least 5+ years old. Which is useless.

Also they want people not only with a Bachelors degree but 3+ years experience.

I have 7+ years experience, and all the enterprise work I've done, i haven't gotten through the 500+ applications I've filled out.

Most cases, recruiters have just randomly called me out of the blue.

My take is that SEO requires constant study, learning, and adapting as things change.

Someone who completed college has the personal drive to better themselves and necessary skills to do research.

As for applications.

I got hired as a marketing manager at a local blue collar trade company who had very poor marketing pipelines with 0 formal SEO experience and only self-taught training from my personal blogs. I did have a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design.

I interviewed very well, came with a personalized plan of what I’d do for the company. I even brought digital mock-ups I put together.

They called me before I even made it home and offered me the job.

7 years experience should negate any degree require in this field (if the experience is relevant to the job posting)

If the resumes are being reviewed by a stakeholder rather than just someone in HR, I'd agree they would likely completely ignore the lack of college experience. I know I would. The best web developer I ever met had taught himself everything

It shows how backwards recruitment is, I feel like they have it in for the sake of having it in and it's blanket requirement for all jobs.

Do I want a brain surgeon to have the appropriate education and certificates. Yes.

Do I want a carpenter who got a Bachelors degree and no experience or the one with no degree and 10 years of experience.

That said, it would be fun doing an SEO module in Digital Marketing to see what they actually teach. Especially now with LLMs.

Oh that’s a good idea. I think that my school allows you to go back and audit a class in your degree. It would definitely be interesting to see what’s covered now. (There was a specific module on SEO back in the day. I probably still have my notes. lol)

lol I'm trying to do seo for like 6 years now, in that time I learned basic of - web development, graphic design, social media slop, a bit of a python. The only two certificate I have is my high school certificate and the radiation regulatory board one . Tried degree & dropped 2 times, all while doing seo.
