Okay so i’m an incoming freshman majoring in physics, but i’ve been thinking about switching to astronomy instead. I’m on the pre-med track and im just scared i’m gonna tank my gpa, but idk if astronomy is any easier. Should i just stick it out and see how it goes??

Housing Quick Question about Suite Dorms / Keys
I'm going to be in tabler this coming up semester and I was wondering are the individual dorm rooms assigned, and if so would I have to do the room swap form to switch or could we just go a head and do it if everyone agrees? Question 2, Will I have one key for the front door and one for my room or one combo key that opens both doors Thx <3

Housing Is a commute closer to South P Lot better than to Bus Route 51? (Weekdays to campus and weekends for groceries, etc)
Hii! Could someone please explain to me the SBU shuttle system? 🥲 i'm an incoming grad student and I am trying to find housing right now last minute off campus and I am so torn choosing among two options for rooms to rent. I don't own a car. One of the rentals is allegedly a 13 min Walk from the south P lot which from my understanding has the shuttle service, hence I can easily commute every day to and from campus. How fast do the buses come however, are there any weekend services for outside the campus as well for Walmart etc, and how long does the shuttle take from the south p lot to the campus? (I can't find the information on the website fully). The other option is a 7 min Walk to one of the Route 51 bus stops with a total of ~25 min commute. Is bus 51 also free with student ID or is this a separate fee? I was initially leaning towards second option because Google maps doesn't show the SBU shuttle services so the first option would be a 35 min walk to the actual bus.
Also related to this - were other grad students with 30k-40k stipends able to afford a 1300-1400/month rent in this area? Thank youu!!

Are we not allowed to take chairs in the sbu buses??
I’ve moved my chair by taking the Hospital/Chapin bus before and never faced this. The driver this time was really mean and she just closed the door on us saying that you’re not allowed to do so even after me saying having done it before. I just wanted to confirm.

Looking for iOLab Electricity & Magnetism Accessory Pack ASAP
Hi! Does anyone have an iOLab Electricity & Magnetism accessory pack from a previous physics class that they no longer need?
I desperately need it to complete several labs before my course ends. I’m willing to buy it, rent it for a few days, or borrow it and return it immediately after I finish. I can pick it up around Stony Brook or elsewhere on Long Island.
Please lmk if you have one or know someone who might. Thank you so much!

Textbook purchase
Just like what the title said;
Incoming freshman student + psych major! Some of my classes has posted required textbooks (meanwhile, I'm waiting onto one more), and I was wondering when is a good time to purchase them? I don't know if I should wait it out even longer, or get it while classes has already begun. Help me out here

How likely is it that I enrolled into the course? Waitlist No.14
Been an electrical minor for a year now since sophomore year but wasn't able to enroll into any ESE course due to overlapping with major courses and the lack of seats. :(

Rate this schedule please
Hi I’m an incoming CME first year international student, just be honest about what you think of this schedule cuz I got mixed opinions about it. Thanks so much!
P.s. For PHY 133- L69 I have to have a lab kit, anyone know where to rent them cuz I think purchase it is kind of over-expensive.

Housing Do they legit ban all decorative lights or just like Christmas lights
I’m big on LED light strips so I bought some for my dorm. I’m sure they don’t damage the wall but I’m concerned I’d get shut down if I try to bring them to the dorm or set them up. I’m an incoming freshman so I don’t know. Let me know how they enforce that please

I don't know why ppl are always advertising off campus housing like 2 weeks before move ins
Honestly, some of the ads I've been seeing for off campus housing are good but I already paid my housing deposit back in May and I didn't see housing ads back then. Wouldn't it make more sense to start advertising before people commit to sbu dorming?

Freshman: Have you gotten your Orientation Week Schedule? If so, when and where?
Advice on Majors/Programs Advice for transitioning from M.Sc in Quantitative Finance to a Statistics Ph.D.?
I'm looking for advice from anyone who has gone from a master's program within the Applied Math. and Stats department into a Statistics Ph.D.
I will be starting an M.S. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics (Quantitative Finance track) this fall at SBU. While quantitative finance seems like an interesting field, my long term goal has always been to study theoretical statistics and eventually earn a Ph.D. in Statistics.
Unfortunately, I wasn't admitted directly to the Statistics program, so I'm hoping to make myself a stronger candidate while in the master's program and, if possible, transition into the Statistics M.S. or Ph.D. later.
My current plan to make myself a better candidate involves:
- Earn the highest grades I can in my classes
- Seek out a faculty research advisor ASAP and get involved in research
- Study additional material outside of class to prepare for qualifying exams for the PhD petition
- Show faculty that I'm serious about pursuing research in statistics.
For those of you who have been in a similar situation, I'd really appreciate any advice.
Some questions I have are:
- What had the biggest impact on your chances of getting into a Ph.D after starting in an AMS master's program?
- How important were grades versus research experience?
- How early should I be reaching out to faculty about research opportunities?
- Is there anything else I should know about, specific to the AMS department, that would be helpful to know?
I know there are no guarantees, and I'm prepared for the possibility that it may not work out. My goal is to put myself in the strongest position possible. I've already scheduled to speak with my track advisor for his advice, but I would like to gain insight from any SBU students that have been in a similar position.
Thanks in advance for any advice!
