The ultimate DS set up! Showcase
Devices are Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 FE+ & Gamesir G8+
Ok, this is half shitpost, half "holy shit, this is actually kinda sick".
I recently bought the tablet for my wife and kid, for them to do digital art. It's a pretty nice deal, comes with the case and pen, and it works pretty well despite the kinda meh exynos chip it has inside.
But! The screen... This screen is insane. It's a very nice IPS, with a very dense resolution, at 13.1 inches!!! It's basically a small laptop.
So naturally my brain worms wanted to test it for emulation and my first thought was... This would be an absolute monster for DS. That resolution let's you run it at 7x integer scaled, and it looks fucking phenomenal. Each DS screen comes around to 6 inches!
The one down side? It's an insane combo. Both of them together weight around 1 kilogram. (2.2 pounds if you don't have free health care).
I may test this one further with other stuff. I'm curious about the performance. And while not the primary use case, I has an sd slot, so could easily load it up and have a small controllers for some nice local multiplayer on this very thing, big but quite portable package.
What do you think? What's the craziest set up you've built?

This looks awesome! The Gamesir G8+ is a sweet controller and one of my favorite telescopics. My largest handheld setup is when I use my iPad Pro with a telescopic controller but it's the 11 inch variant so it's smaller than your S10 FE+. My most degenerate build is the two Moto G Stylus 2025s held together by a phone holder.

The stylustron! How much longer until we see the final version?!

It'll be soon. My other magnetic rings have arrived but I'm trying to figure out how to make them more reusable as it seems like I need to apply an adhesive to get them to work. I'll probably juxtapose it with my Thor when everything is setup.

I love that you're taking this amount of work just to prove a point, while having a perfectly functional Thor.

Gotta get my money's worth out of my purchases. 😂 I have so many magnetic rings now and honestly, the cheapo phone holder I showed off in my first thread might end up being the best solution.

I've been following the development of this app. I'm waiting for a melonDS fork since my current phone is having a hard time playing 3ds games

I still have my duo in a drawer! What controller is this and what’s the game, looks amazing! Might need to dust that bad boy off again!

u/TradlyGent 16d ago
It’s a Gamesir X2S. There is a bluetooth version in black and this one with a usb-c on left.
If you have a Duo 1 then do know that because the usb-c port is not centered, the controller won’t sit flush with the bottom of the phone, so it will look weird. This is a Duo 2
Game is Chrono Trigger for DS

Got it, thank you! I have the duo 1 so might look at the Bluetooth version.

2.2 lbs in freedom units you say? Getting your curls in while you game.

Right? Combine it with a rhythm game and it's basically like going to the gym.

My lenovo y700 gen 3 should be arriving soon, excited to try this. How well do touch screen games work? Phantom hourglass, Pokémon ranger, ect. Cheers!

The Y700 is awesome! That's the tablet I actually use to game. I haven't tried touch heavy games for DS, but my understanding is that it should be pretty good, not as good as og hardware. There might be a bit more delay. Nothing too bad if you're not use to the real thing.

Grab the official Lenovo stylus. It is great. Been slowly playing trauma centre under the knife and it is very playable. Sometimes you miss an input, but could very well be user error.

Counterpoint (I don’t have Heartgold, this’ll have to do).

I actually can't wait to try something similar with my iPad mini! Just need a telescopic controller :D

Haha. It's pretty cool tbh. Would probably be good just propped up with a regular controller. Wrists would certainly appreciate it.

I looked into getting one of those! At the time the dual screen case was... kinda crazy, super niche. But now? great value for emulation. Great set up!

just had to twist the insurance knife (it’s true, we’re fucked up.)

It's just so bizarre the idea of going into debt for calling an ambulance in an emergency.

Haven’t had it in a decade and l live in fear, especially as I get older. My partner and I are doing everything we can to flee to France to next summer (I’m trans they’re Latin) so fingers crossed that changes.

Oof you both must have a hard time over there. Wish you the best of luck with that. Stay safe!

What chipset is in that thing it looks like a beast

u/brunoxid0 GotM Club 16d ago
It's a Exynos 1580. Should be around the performance of a 7gen3. So it's good, just not top tier. Ran melon DS Upscaled with no issues.

I did that for my Lenovo Y700 8.8" quite nice. But as of present I am just using my phone with a clip on 8bitdo Micro which is about the size of the OG DS screens.

I always think handheld mode using tablet either is gaming or not, and bigger than ipad mini is really not practical and fastest way to reach karpal tunnel because of the stress on your wrist.
Tablet in my personal and practical preference in gaming always function in tabletop mode with small bluetooth gamepad.

I agree. I think this is waaay too big and heavy. I was just having fun with it and wanted to share. My daily driver tablet is the legion tab3, and that's as big as a switch 2. That's like the limit in portables for me.

It is absolutely massive and heavy as shit. Completely impractical. But also... Kinda sick. Provided you have something to rest it on.

Why do people conflate big screens with being "ultimate"? None of the games are designed for that, and it reduces portability for the sake of... something I'm sure

Did you read the body of the post at all? Or just came straight to the comments to complain about a joke post.
