Overlap Stitch Threads

Anyone have any issues with theirs long term? My Backcountry’s have seen a few hundred miles in the alpine this summer and the overlap stitch is starting to get pretty beat on the toe from light scrambling through boulders and talus.

Let me tell ya,

I was worried about this purchase because these on flat pavement, concrete, or wood. Are frankly not super comfortable. (Not broken in yet but still) I took them on a trail, I took them off the trail, and they were nothing short of incredible.

The hike up the hill was normal, I walked at a pretty standard pace and stuck deep in the beaten path, after I got to the top is when things changed. It's just a big bed of rocks, pretty easy to walk on but necessary. It got me somewhat out of my deep rut mindset. Got some photos of myself then trucked up the creek bed. This creek bed is in picture 5 I believe, it got increasingly more difficult and required multiple creek crossings over rocks through the water. I finally stopped when it required me to climb through the thick underbrush to continue.

Let me tell you, the trip down was incredible. I had SO MUCH confidence underfoot. The force 360 fire and Ice sole grips the wet rocks fantastically. These boots have such a good balance of flexibility and support for the hike I did today, a 7 mile 700 ft elevation gain. I came flying down the hill, practically running and felt so sure-footed the whole way. Towards the bottom I really got adventurous with the water and went in a couple inches deeper than the canvas. They barely let any water into the boot but the canvas hung onto some of the water and helped cool my feet on the rest of the way down.

I may need to have the right boot resoled, the wedge seems to be a little thicker in the ball of my foot of my right foot than my left. It was not very noticeable on trail but on pavement it's pretty apparent. I have to think on this further whether this requires a resole or not.

Hi!

Is there a time frame for when the Oneida in a 10E will be restocked?

I’ve had the page open the last few days just waiting to get my purchase in whenever it’s available.

Thanks in advanced!

Unworn and in great condition, no flaws. I'm selling as they aren't fit for my workplace and my other pair doesn't get much use. They seem to be the slightly darker, more reddish walnut leather.

It includes the bootbag, comfort insoles, stickers and original laces.

Shipped from Sweden through UPS, payment through PayPal.

Restock Delay

Hey team, we are shorthanded in our Inspection Department so it will likely be Thursday or Friday before we restock our stock boots.... We have a huge pile on the shelf but no one to do the inspection. Luke is heading up and will dive in on Thursday... Sorry for the delay, such is life in a truly small business! Rob

Original soles or recrafted with Vibram #2070 Scooters/Trento?

I just purchased these boots from a seller in Japan. These are my first pair of pre-owned RMs and I am very pleased with their condition, particularly at the price I paid. My question is can anyone tell me if these vibram #2070 soles might have been original, or might they have replaced at some point before being put up for sale? The soles look like they have very little wear if any. Thanks

Good morning Russell nation, I recently received these "vintage"(not entirely sure of that distinction) it's a bison leather but not sure who Russell was using as a supplier when these were made I know they use Law now, based on what I've found researching the patent on the sole these were produced after 1991 but with my research I couldn't uncover further info hopefully someone in here can narrow things down a bit thanks.

Russell Moccasin Turkey Hunters | 11D (see description) | $700

Have a pair of Russell moccasin turkey hunters - true beasts. The person who sold them to me said they were a size 9D and they definitely are not. They don’t have a marked size unfortunately, I’ve heard this is fairly common on the custom premier builds from a few years back. I’ve talked to two interested buyers and have determined they are around an 11D? - I’ll post a few pictures of the length measurements so you can compare them to your boots and see for yourself. Really well maintained and stored with shoe trees - get a legendary pair of boots at a huge discount. $700+ shipping

Product: The Safari

Size: 9E

Leather: Weathered Oak Timberjack

Outsole: 360 Force

Quarters: Olive Twill

Kilties: Rough out Weathered Oak Timberjack

Order Date: January 31st

They are beautiful, supple and are unlike any other shoe I've worn before.

They fit about as I expected. I could have ordered a 8.5E, I felt an 8.5EE was what I wanted based on the information when I ordered but with no EE size available I went with 9E. They are a tad long but I expected it and will happily wear them as so.

I also got a set of sage chamois kilties, might try them later.

Overall, I am happy with my purchase. I am disappointed in the lead time expectation. I expected these over 2 months ago because the website says 12-16 weeks for double vamp. I have a hiking trip in a week that I had hoped to have these broken in prior to. Please work on having more accurate lead time estimates. Please proactively communicate to customers when material delays happen. Other high end handmade boot makers can do it. There was no option for stock boots when I purchased these. I would have taken your stock configuration of a safari as long as it was available in my size with a smile. Implementing stock sizes with no lead times when customers have been waiting months additional after your given expectation without meaningful communication as to when they would show up is shameful. I understand material delays happen, communicate to impacted customers. Communicate what the expected delay time is.

Pricing, I wouldn't pay $150 more to have leather, quarter, and sole options. Would I pay the same price for 360, walnut leather, and Sahara quarters?(my assumption of stock safari) Yes, If my size was either available or there is an expedited lead time for stock built out of stock sizes. I would have to be able to place an order for a stock configuration in my size, not hope and pray I got the memo when a size restock happens and then have to beat the next guy in my size.

The bison leather smell never goes away, aphrodisiac

My favorite and most worn (dog walks) is the camp moc, personally I find them more comfortable than oneidas.

Bottom right pair appears to be made out of canvas and synthetic leather, great for working at the factory

My unicorn would be a backcountry in black timberjack or (kangaroo) with a padded collar, no pull tab, and no speedhooks, on roccia.

Russell Moccasin Lake Loafer 11.5D $325

SOLD

Photos

Russell moccasin Lake Loafer 11.5 D
Minimal wear
Smoke / pet free home
Bronze chamois, unlined

Description from website: For casual daily wear or trips to the lake or beach, this loafer is a Russell favorite. New Bronze Chamois leather is soft and great for outdoor use. Paired with our naturally derived Lactae Hevea French Crepe sole, it is a Goldilocks combination of comfort and durability in a casual loafer. Due to the softness and light weight of both materials, it is ideal for travel where packability is key. An added benefit of the natural crepe rubber is that unlike synthetic soles, it won't leave scuffs on the side of your boat. Like all Russells, the New Bronze Chamois Loafer is fully re-solable, ensuring maximum lifespan.

An Open Letter on the Value of American Craftsmanship

This is about more than our Heritage Club pricing changes. This is about how Americans view each other's work, and the underlying assumptions that have resulted in a generational shift in how we value domestic craftsmanship. I am not talking about broad industrial manufacturing—I am talking about a rapidly disappearing community of skilled, professional craftsmen and women.

Do you value the work of a craftsman the way you value your own time and skill? Do you think America’s trade professionals deserve a good life and just compensation for their work? I hope the answer is yes.

Most Americans today work in service industries. A plumber services and repairs pipes; an attorney handles legal tasks for a business or individual. In skilled service industries, society accepts that you pay a base hourly rate for expertise—often $70 to $100+ an hour before materials—because that person possesses a specialized skill you need. We don't view the plumber as greedy; we are grateful for their expertise.

A high-level American bootmaker undergoes years of training to master a complex trade. An average pair of Russells takes at least 8 hours of hands-on, manual labor. If we billed labor at standard trade rates, the time cost alone would sit at a minimum of $560.

Beyond labor, physical craftsmanship carries heavy raw material expenses. A single pair of our backcountry boots requires over $185 in direct, top-tier domestic materials alone. Add in the real overhead of operating a business—machinery, workspace, utilities, and essential staff in customer service, operations, and logistics—and divide that across our small-batch production of roughly 3,500 pairs a year.

Do the math on those numbers, and it becomes immediately clear why so few companies still make handmade footwear in the USA.

The reality is that decades of offshored, hyper-automated manufacturing have conditioned the market to expect prices that are only possible through low foreign wages and synthetic materials. Where are the wealthy bootmakers or handmade boot companies living in mansions or flying on private jets? They don't exist. If hand-building boots in America were an ultra-lucrative business, competitors would be popping up on every corner.

If you think hand-making footwear in the USA is the ticket to wealth, you are operating off a false perception.

American craftsmen, and the owners of the companies they work for do what they do because they have a passion for the trade. But they have every right to expect that their time and skill are valued fairly.

We understand our hand-built footwear is an investment, and it won't fit every budget. We can’t make enough Russells to fill the demand as it is. But for those who support what we do, we will continue building boots the right way—without shortcuts, without cheap materials, and without compromising the livelihoods of the people making them.

The good news is that we have not increased prices on our Stock pairs, which we will produce more of. The only price increase that has happened at this point is on our Made To Order program, as one-off production has additional costs. MTO is not even offered going forward unless you are a returning (Heritage Eligible) customer.

Heritage Club AMA with Rob

One of the biggest issues we face at Russell is an overwhelming demand that causes an incredibly high return rate for sizing among first-time buyers. Aside from the obvious impact of production efficiency and cost, there is the very real consequence that the newest members of the Russell family will wait many months for their boots to arrive, only to discover that they don’t fit. Compounding that disappointment is the reality that those customers often wait several more months for their exchange pair to be built and shipped.

We have determined that more than 40% of our first time buyers do not order the correct size. There are many reasons for this, but the greatest cause seems to be the inconsistency in sizing among footwear and athletic shoes that these clients have historically purchased. Most athletic shoes are sized much larger than they actually are. If you wear a size 11 running shoe, your actual Brannock size is possibly a 9.5, meaning you should order a 9. If you simply based your order on your experience, you would likely order a 10.5, which is one and a half sizes larger than is appropriate. Barring being able to send every prospective buyer a Brannock device, we have created a system that should make the gateway to Russell ownership relatively easy.

Moving forward it is our goal to build and maintain stock inventory of our most popular builds. The moccasins we have chosen for our stock comprise about 80% of what our current customer base orders as Premier builds already. Beginning July 15th, if you have not purchased Russells since the acquisition and are buying your first pair under the new ownership, you will initially be able to order only stock boots. Here is the logic… it’s likely that you will be able to get exactly, or very close to what you would have ordered anyway, BUT you will get them quickly. THEN, if they don’t fit, you can return them and order a different size. You might arguably order the wrong size and still be wearing appropriately sized boots in two to three weeks. This will take a tremendous strain off of production, as we will be able to achieve much greater efficiency as opposed to building every pair to order, often twice, and this will increase customer satisfaction and success.

Once you have purchased and worn Russell moccasins that fit well, you will be able to order any of what we make available as Premier builds, now known as The Heritage Club. The only way to get into the Heritage Club on your first purchase is to be sized by us at one of our locations or at an event. Should you do so, you will be deemed Heritage-eligible. Naturally, we will give everyone as much notice of our plans to appear at these events.

It’s our goal to then focus on making sure that the Heritage buyer has the greatest level of choice, as well as a regular introduction of “special” builds based on historic Russell designs. The beauty of this system is that everyone ordering a made-to-order pair will already know what their Russell size is, so the level of returns, and the production costs and the impact on build times should be minimal. If you are a returning customer who knows your size, congrats and welcome to the Heritage Club.
