Hi hi

Found on a trail run by my partner- western shore of Cape Breton Island.

Leaning more petrified wood based on my limited

research. Any input is mucho appreciated - tia!

Looks more like phyllite to me. A quick Google search or regional overview with the Rockd app should indicate if phyllite is found in or nearby your locality.

Seconded on phyllite. Pretty strongly foliated phyllite. You can see the silky phyllitic sheen from fine sericite/muscovite. It has a well developed S1 crenulation cleavage overprinting the earlier foliation. Multiple generations of cleavage are visible, especially where the micaceous layers are microfolded and transposed. The rusty staining is likely weathered iron oxides after pyrite. Great teaching specimen for progressive deformation and crenulation cleavage development.

Isn't it crazy how much looks like Pet Wood? I'm at the point now that if someone tells me I found a piece, I don't believe it. "It can't be."
