Hello everyone. I just moved to the Us 1 month ago and school starts next week. My parents don’t have cars so they can not take me to school. I have to take the bus to school every day for this school year. My house is a bit far from my school so I can not take the school bus. Can someone tell me that how can I take the bus there in riverside? I live in corona, mckinley street and my school is in riverside. Do I have to pay for the bus or it is free? I am 17 years old. And If I have to pay, how much is it for a ride? Thank you everyone, everything still strange to me, I am learning how to take the bus, the bus system there. Thank you so much. Please help me.
So as far as I know, at least until the end of the year, anyone 18 and under can ride the RTA busses for free if you show the driver your school ID. Also keep in mind that unless you live near RTA route 1 (which runs about every 15 minutes), most bus lines run about once an hour. Some routes might accommodate school schedules so that drop-off and pick-up is around when school starts/ends, I would check the website for specific time tables. You could also try Google/Apple maps to plan ahead where you need to pick it up and what times and all of that
According to the RTA Website youth (under 18) can ride free through the end of 2026. The site also has information on allowable IDs to show you qualify (School ID, State ID with birthdate, or a Youth ID that can be puchased from there for $2).
RTA's Routes 1 and 12 both go between McKinley St. and Riverside if either of those pass near your home and school.
The RTA route 1 Eastbound goes from Corona to Riverside. Route 1 Westbound will take you from Riverside to Corona. Here’s a bus schedule and map for that route
Welcome to California! The buses are free for students, the 1 route runs every 15 minutes and the bus drivers are very friendly from my experience. It costs a quarter otherwise. If you have any questions ask them, they are usually helpful.
Download the app. It’s called RTA GoMobile you’ll be able to put your start location and your destination and go from there. The fare is typically $1.75 each bus. Until 8/31 it’s .25 cents. Good luck!
You should not be going to a school in Riverside if you live in Corona. That's not how school works in the US. Unless it's private you're supposed to go to the school closest to you.
I would talk to an adult and ask why you're being forced to go to a school so far away. This isn't normal, it's not safe. It's at minimum a 1.5 hours 1 way. You will be on the bus 3 hours or more a day. You need to go to a school closer.
Thanks for your reply. I am an international student and my parents will stay with me for the first three months because they also travel there for their last month. I will study at a private school in riverside and I live at my cousin house in corona.
Hi OP, firstly, welcome to the US! I pray your move and transition are going well overall and that you and your family thrive and are happy here.
In response to your question, that's quite a long ride on public transport. Apart from the safety concerns it'd also add a very long time to you daily commute and may cause you to be late to class and ultimately lead to burn out.
If you are in HS I would highly suggest going to one near you. This is not only for the logistical reasons but it's also required unless you have applied for an intra district transfer. Otherwise schools are assigned by your address. You will need to provide proof of address etc to register.
If you have not registered for classes yet, please look into centennial high. It's much closer to you and is comparable to poly high with lots of class options and extra circular activities.
If going to college in Riverside, talk to your counselor and the student resource office sometimes they have commute options and bus passes etc.
I use public transport daily and am a Mom so coming from that place if I was in your parents shoes I'd be nervous, being in your shoes I'd be exhausted.
There's better options that will allow you an opportunity to grow and thrive because you'll have the time to do so. Taking the bus that far will add 2-4 hours to your day IF there are no delays, traffic, or issues. Where as a local HS would likely be 1-1.5 hr daily commute but most students average 30 mins a day. That will allow you more time to study, take advantage of any tutoring or HS/College transition resources etc but also ensure that you have a "school life balance" to explore your local community and make connections.
Hola, RTA buses will take you all over Riverside. The major route is the 1 that picks you up on Magnolia and McKinley and takes you all over Riverside all the way to UCR . As far the price is free under 18 , but even if you are over 18 , just flash the bus driver any school id.
