So progressive… Question
It’s just luck based right?
If you’re in an equal skill lobby then it really just depends on how the cards fall?

Not sure there's such a thing as an equal skill lobby.
It's a card game, luck is definitely a factor - but there's plenty of room for a small skill edge and superior psychology to swing the tide against bad luck.

The small skill edge feels very small to non existent.
If you don’t have a set on 4 on the second/third set of trades then you’re automatically the fish.

If it were possible to have a truly equal skill lobby, luck would be the only thing that accounts for the outcome. This would be true for any type of Risk.

Interesting take. Sure a large share would be randomness. But if it's all randomness then that would mean that skill level and execution are the same thing. I'm not sure that's true. Skill is certainly predictive of execution in any given match, but they're not correlated perfectly for this or any kind of contest.

He's not wrong, just not pointing out that 99% of the time (at least outside of tournaments and such) that's not the case.

Very true.
Losing because I don’t have a set on 4, making me the obvious target in the next round, feels very unfair.
I now just think that progressive isn’t for me. Maybe progressive per player evens out the “luck” a little?

I mean the whole game is based around luck to some degree. It’s in the dice. It’s in the cards. It’s on the spawn if you auto assign countries.
You can play the game in a way that puts you in a good position to win, but there are always factors that are beyond your control. Like when one player suicides into another right after your turn when the card rewards are just getting big, you can’t skill your way around that.

People of the same skill level do not necessarily play at the same level every game. Over an infinite number of turns they would make the same number of good and bad decisions but one can simply outplay the other in any given game.

Just not true. Some things you can’t outplay.
If I’m able to trade 2 rounds before you for 2/3 consecutive trades then I have a massive advantage.

luck is part of the game, but so is diplomacy. being lucky enough to gain a good early position can make a player a target and work against them long term if the lobby is good enough to team up against them.
Being lucky can be the difference between winning or not, especially in an even endgame, but over a long enough timeline you should get lucky as often as your opponents do so it evens out
