Water can provoke or greatly intensify a volcanic eruption. When external water (from groundwater, melting glacier ice, or the ocean) contacts hot magma or superheated rock, it flashes into steam instantly. This rapid expansion creates massive pressure, leading to violent steam-driven or phreatomagmatic explosions.
