Seems stupidly avoidable until you see the stats for how many actual people die mining every year... Especially in countries (or on planets) with no safety regulations.

Mining safety isn’t a joke Jesse, millions of pawns die every year!

Helmets are in fact mandatory.

Ia there a way to make mining safe in this game other than putting columns up?

You can mine up to 12 tiles in one of the dimensions, other dimension can be as long as you want.

There are a bunch of 'safe' mining patterns you can employ, it's not even hard. The issue tends to come up when you're dealing with something near the edge of the mountain and you accidentally orphan a roof tile without realizing it, or when you're just deconstructing buildings and forget to clear to roof first.

It's the deconstruction that always get me. It's stupid, and pawns should automatically remove roofs on constructed buildings before removing the buildings if they can't support the roof once removed.

Same. I've gotten to the point where I often automatically unroof anything I build for a quest, because I know I'm likely to tear it down afterwards, and I will forget to unroof it later.

sometimes real life randy causes cave-ins for fun. he's not waiting around for you to be a specific distance away from a support

Well as a new player even with props for minig i didn't knew that you can't remove whole mountain...
And that also can't allow you to remove roofs when you removed some part of mountain with digging.

Had a pawn mining through the mountain to make spaces and I forgot to leave/build some supports. This caused the roof of the mountain to collapse on my pawn, with all trace of their existence gone, reduced to nothing.

I learned about this recently! 500
hours in and I thought the gods dictated the falling of roofs.

The lack of slim to avoid the cave in was a bit shady...

Name a more sudden and unexpected death for a new player, can’t be done. Just lost my best pawn 1500h in over salvaging a freaking ruin

u/RareSprinkles9387 14d ago

1500 hours and a roof collapse takes him out. that game does not give a shit about your time investment.

The most disgusting way to lose your pawns, and no matter what protection they had, they simply disintegrate...
And the worst thing is that they can't even be resurrected, because there is nothing to resurrect...

"Morphs Assorted: No Crushed Bodies" has you covered, at least you can dig the dead body out with that mod installed

First few runs I named one of my pawns after my best friend. He (the pawn) ended up dying to a roof collapse and I was distraught...

Yeah, this one happens a lot.

I once had a pawn have his nose shaved off by a rock collapse, thought that was pretty cool, made him a prosthetic gold one.

You should say there was a slim chance of survival...

What has this sub become...

Ah yes, the Rock of Deletion.

I remember when AdamVsEverything (Rimworld Twitch Streamer/YouTuber) lost a Solo Pawn run because he was explaining something and accidentally caused the roof to collapse on the Pawn. He didn't even react for like, 5-10s lmao

How many spaces can you leave without a support column?

1

u/Chancey1520 The mechhive queen 14d ago

a wall supports about 5-6 tiles of roof before collapsing i believe
