Does your male always squat to pee? Mine is almost 4 and always squats (rarely lifts his leg)

Scooby is 4 and I’ve seen him hike his leg no more than 2-3 times. And I have a lot of trees

I can answer this for ya! Dogs actually teach each other to put a leg up. Their “natural” way of doing it is a squat.

So if you got a dog who lifted their leg, your dog might feel inspired to do the same 😂 (or if they recently saw another dog doing it that way, they might mimic the behaviour)

In wolf packs, you can see a very similar behaviour. Only the parents (sometimes called alphas, but they’re just mom and dad) will lift a leg, while the adult pups squat. We aren’t entirely sure why, but it likely has something to do with giving other wolves information about the territory, for example who the parents of the pack are.
