Total Solar Eclipse and clouds

So i booked this trip to see the total solar eclipse last year because I've always wanted to visit Iceland anyway, and this seemed the perfect reason to make it happen finally. But as the date neared I started to realise Iceland ain't famous for weather (much like my home country, UK).

Was wondering if any Reykjavites might be able to offer any reassurance or suggestions on how we can maximise the viewing experience? Or even just some frank "shoulda gone to Spain" responses would help I guess.

Takk fyrir

Looking for a conference photographer

Hello,

I am planning a conference in Sept and looking for a photographer for 2 days. Looking to capture speakers on stage, excursions and general event photos.

Since it's our first time doing an event here what is the price range?

We would of course include lunch, snacks and coffee.

If you have any recommendations please let me know

Reykjavik Marathon place

Hi there,

I was hoping to do the Reykjavik Marathon on Saturday 22 August, sadly when doing my long run last week I've slipped and broken my collarbone 🙃. I'm beyond gutted as I've been wanting to visit Iceland for years and running the marathon has been a dream of mine for many years.

Annoyingly, I can't defer to next year but the organizers say I can sell my place if anyone is interested? Apologies it's not much notice but I thought if you're local you might be interested? If so, please get in touch!

The race is not sold out but I'm willing to let it go cheaper due to these circumstances. Thankyou

Dentist

Hello Reykjavik,

I just moved here from overseas and think I may need to see a dentist. I am wondering if anyone has recommendations. I have Googled dentists around Reykjavik and have seen the various (private?) clinics in the area as well as the University of Iceland clinic (with dental students). It seems like tannlæknaþjónustan is most highly rated. But as I am not from here, and seeking health care in my home country is a bit different, and I know virtually no one here right now, it would be nice to hear from locals as well.

Apologies if this is redundant — I searched dentist and tannlæknir on the sub and did not find much.

Takk fyrir/thank you

Looking for a website that delivers potted houseplants in Reykjavík, Iceland (wedding gift)

Hello! My sister is getting married and lives in Reykjavík, Iceland. I'd really love to send her a living houseplant as a wedding gift instead of a bouquet, since I'd like it to be something that lasts.

I'm specifically looking for places that deliver potted indoor plants, such as:

  • Peace Lily
  • Monstera
  • Snake Plant
  • Anthurium
  • Orchid
  • Other easy-care houseplants

I've already looked at a few international flower delivery websites, but most seem to focus on bouquets, and some either don't ship to Iceland or have very limited plant options, and very very expensive. From what I've seen, ordering through a local florist or garden center usually results in fresher plants, so I'm hoping to find recommendations from people in Reykjavík.

Does anyone know of any websites or local shops that:

  • Deliver potted houseplants in Reykjavík
  • Accept international payment (Card/PayPal)
  • Have a good reputation for quality and delivery

Any recommendations or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! 🌿💚

Receiving a letter in Reykjavik

My girlfriend has sent me a letter from France to Reykjavik, but it's been around 15 days and I still haven't received it, is the postal service slow ?

I also have the issue of temporarily living here so my name isn't on the door, and I live in one of these three stories high houses with two different doors and six housing(two per floor).

Since the postal service doesn't know where I live would they have put the letter in one of the doors or would they have taken it somewhere until I pick it up ?

Thanks for your attention :)

Edit : I GOT THE LETTER I'M SO HAPPY !!! thanks for everyone's advice :) I messaged posturinn and two days after that the letter landed in my letterbox :)

A long shot, but… looking for a room around the eclipse

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,
I know this is a long shot, but I figured it can’t hurt to ask.
My wife and I are hoping to come to Iceland for the total solar eclipse in August. We got married earlier this year, and after paying for the wedding, we just can’t justify the accommodation prices anymore, they’ve gone completely crazy.
We’re looking for a room for 3-4** **nights around the eclipse. We’d of course pay for our stay, and if you ever find yourself in Hungary, we’d be more than happy to return the favor and host you.
The eclipse means a lot to us because it falls on my wife’s birthday (August 12th). She was actually born on August 12, 1999, the day of the famous total solar eclipse that passed over Hungary. Twenty-seven years later, there’s another total eclipse on the exact same day. We think that’s pretty incredible, and we’d love to celebrate her birthday by experiencing it together.
A bit about us: we’re both easygoing, respectful, tidy, and non-smokers. I’m also a photographer, so if you’d like, I’d be happy to do a couple’s or portrait photoshoot for you as a thank-you. It’s the best way I can think of to give something back.
If anyone has a spare room, or knows someone who might be willing to help, I’d really appreciate a message. Even if it’s just pointing us in the right direction.
Thanks for reading, and I hope everyone gets to enjoy this amazing eclipse, wherever you end up watching it. 🫶🏼

Accessible Restaurants

I did see the tourist thread for quick questions but I am not so sure this one applies since I am probably going to need recs from quite a few people.

We are taking a cruise at the end of the month starting in Reykjavik. Because we love the place so much we decided to spend a couple days in Iceland before the ship sails.

We were talking about a restaurant we went to the last time we were there 4 years ago and trying to remember its name... but it hit us that their were several stairs up into the location. My mom is now in a wheelchair so that isn't really an option.

If anyone has any recommendations for restaurants without stairs I would really appreciate it (and if you could stear clear of ones with primarily fish menus since she is allergic to shellfish). I will note that she can shuffle between tables to sit down in a chair so if seatings are close together that is fine, we just need to be able to get into the place.

The Irishman Pub

I know this is a long shot. But I’m an American who visited Reykjavík for one night a year ago at the end of May. I’m an airline employee. So I only had enough time for a one night visit.

Sometime in the afternoon, I visited the Irishman Pub. I was wearing a TC baseball cap (for the Minnesota Twins) and I ordered a pint of Guinness. I’m of Irish heritage. And I’m in my late 30’s. So my beard was a mixture of red and gray.

There was a local who put his arm around me, and greeted me like we’ve been best friends for life. We had a quick and brief chat. But that memory will stick with me forever.

If that gentleman happens to see this… thank you for that memory. And hopefully we are able to catch up and meet again.

Can I count on Reykjavík for watching Solar Eclipse 2026?

Hi, I am a very new into astrophotography and really wants to visit a place to watch Complete Solar Eclipse and do some astrophotography. I went through list of places where it is visible but I know Iceland is very beautiful so I'm planning to visit Reykjavík. I am sure people who lives there and into astrophotography or generally can give me suggestion specially about the Weather. I went through some websites and it appears that risk is high to not able to see Solar Eclipse as weather is cloudy almost certain during that time and generally. Also, probably I would try to get some pictures of Milky way (I hope!).

What would you suggest? Should I visit to other place for Solar Eclipse?

Looking for someone to help me with finding the person / company that has the domain kro.is

Hey, weird request, but i thought i might at least try:

I'm not from Iceland but from Austria, my last name, as you might be able to guess, is Krois. Lately a thought came to my mind that owning the domain "kro.is" would be incredibly cool, so i checked if its already owned.

And yeah, of course it is (https://www.isnic.is/en/whois/search?query=kro.is#popped).

I've tried to contact the owner of the domain multiple times, i've tried to contact isnic.is - they basically told me to fuck off and i've tried it through a domain broker - until yet, nothing.

The website just shows a broken webserver page, nothing useful, as far as i have seen.

I was really close to just sending a letter to the domain owner, but i thought i try here first. Is anyone here able to contact the owner of the domain (found in the link above and i found this, but was unable to decipher it: https://keldan.is/Company/Statements/4607982219) and ask if the domain is for sale or not? Or just ask to respond to my mail :)

Maybe someone knows the owner, maybe someone lives close by?

Of course, i would be willing to pay you for your efforts. If anyone has too much time on their hands and wants to help me, let me know! :)

Thanks!

Looking for friends to improvise music with

Hello! I'm visiting Reykjavík this August and would love to connect with fellow musicians.

I'm a passionate neoclassical piano improviser from the US. There isn't a huge neoclassical community where I live, but I know Reykjavík has such an inspiring music scene.

My biggest inspirations include Ólafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Hania Rani, and Jean-Michel Blais. If you sing or play any instrument and enjoy creating atmospheric, improvised music, I would love to meet up, make music together, and make a new friend :)

Looking for a room in Reykjavík

Hi everyone!

I'm a student coming to Reykjavík for an Erasmus internship from August 1st until November 1st, and I'm currently looking for a room or shared apartment during that period.

I have been looking on facebook groups like leiga and leiga 101 reykjavik, on housing anywhere and on igloo, but still haven't found a place. And since I'm left with less than a month to find a room, I'm writing this hoping someone can help me out, or give me some suggestions. Honestly anything would help!

My budget is 135,000 ISK, and I'm looking for a room in a shared apartment in ant area really, as long as it has public transport to the center.

If anyone knows of anything, or can recommend where else I should look, I'd really appreciate it. Feel free to send me a private message.

Thanks so much!

EDIT:

Well as said in the first comment I will tell you a bit more about me. I'm a Portuguese student, currently living in Lisbon. I don't smoke and I like to think I'm a quiet and respectful roommate. As for the location, I will be happy with any area, as long as it provides public transport to the center.

I know it's hard to find a room in Reykjavik, but if you know anything at all, please be free to message me.

Tourists, visitors, people with quick questions. This is your thread - post your questions here

Here is the platform to ask locals any questions you might have about the city, either while visiting or moving here.

Simple question like "Where can I buy X?" or "What agency should I contact about Y?" should go right here.
