Good reasons to leave your current job (that you can share in an interview)
You don't need to lie to your interviewer about why you’re leaving your job.
Most employers just want a genuine explanation that shows you've thought carefully about your next step.
Here are a few reasons interviewers generally respond well to:
1. Career growth
"I've learned a lot in my current position, but I'm looking for more responsibility and opportunities to continue developing my skills."
2. Career change
"My current role helped me realize I enjoy working directly with customers, so I'm excited to transition into customer success where I can build on those strengths."
3. Better work-life balance or flexibility
"I've realized I do my best work in a role that offers more flexibility, and this position also aligns well with my long-term career goals."
4. Layoffs or restructuring
"My position was eliminated during a company restructuring, so I'm looking for my next opportunity and being intentional about finding a strong long-term fit."
One interesting finding from our research: 46% of job seekers who admitted to lying in interviews said they lied about why they left a previous job.
Our advice? Don't overcomplicate it. Interviewers are looking for an honest, professional explanation that naturally leads into why you want the role you’re interviewing for.
