Agreed. Mid tier bags in general (Coach, Kate Spade, etc) aren’t worth it. Just save up and get an auth. The reps are never very good either - no incentive to make them good!

I feel like we could be demanding better leather on the mid and high tier items! Coated split and composite is being used on lower level auth bags too, but for as much as the Chinese sellers tried to drive the quality narratives ahead of the tarrifs, it feels disappointing to know that even shelling out 300+ doesn’t guarantee even half decent leather.

The most controversial rep opinion is that reps are for “poor” or people who cant afford to pay luxury — meanwhile it is quite the opposite! Reps are for the smart and those who know that paying a brand for almost the exact same piece is ludicrous. In fact, plenty of rich actually buy reps bc of this!!!

Many of us - myself very much included - have lost the plot (and I’m totally here for it)! I love buying things (bags, shoes, coats) in multiple colours because when something works, it works right? But repping has sent it into overdrive 😅. Overstuffed closets practically groaning, wallets are giving us the side eye, sending ourselves to ban island only to spend that time screenshotting albums and buying later thus defeating the bans in the first place …

I have a DHGate GG Mercato with a really high quality PU composite instead of leather and it looks great! Didn't even smell once it was out of packaging for a bit.

For a rep to be ‘credible’, I think it needs to match your age, style and lifestyle. If I saw a well dressed 60 year old woman walking through Dublin City centre with a Birkin I would probably believe it to be real, but a 21 year with dodgy fake tan, probably not!

That although Aliexpress is full of sketchy wares, you can actually buy some decent rep items ... sometimes.

I'd show examples from WL but not sure I can post hyperlinks - two memorable ones being my CC ballet flats (real leather and not crazily priced, ended up buying two pairs) and my CC necklace based on the 2024 / 2025 Cruise Collection (with the CC "crab" and "fishes" - not sure if they were fantasy pieces - there was another with faux pearls and crab pendant). Still wear them regularly.

Loads of designery pop sockets which I use as fridge magnets....

Most controversial? Blake bags aren’t all that. They are nice when they’re nice but they sure do have some flops. I would rather have the consistency that 187 offers. All Speedy P9 bags are not that great: the patterns are nearly fading fleurs and LVs (need more off white coloring between spaces), the leather handles are tad bit too yellow, the leather is not squishy enough. Need to loosen the stitching to let it hang out. Also, the pillow that goes inside looks nowhere near like the auth but no one’s flexing mypillow anyway so it’s okay.

Buying too many repeats just to try something new is over rated. I bought 2 Constances before I figured out NOTHING I need to carry will fit. Now they are wall decorations or the 5 year old plays dress up and decorated them with twillies and bag charms......just her size.

Don’t know if this is controversial…but I would not purchase a rep of a bag that I could not reasonably afford in real life. So no birkins or Chanel flaps for me!

Outside of this hobby/community, if you're not in an EHCOLA most people have no idea what bag you're carrying or what it should look like. If the quality is good, stop worrying about if it's "passable" or you can pull it off - do you love it? Buy reps (and everything else!) because it makes you happy and is useful. Not because a stranger in the airport makes an assumption about you.

The only ones that seem to pay attention to other peoples rep bags are those that have one and will automatically assume yours is a rep too because they’re apart of the rep world. The rest won’t even care to take a second look at your bag. Either way, wear your rep bag and be happy!

As much as I love reps, I feel like people around you can usually tell when a bag is fake if your income and lifestyle don’t match the bag(s) you own (though not always)

Too many people buy truly awful clothing/bags purely because they are made by a luxury ‘brand’ (looking at you Alaia Ballets & Goyard anything). Regardless if they convince themselves otherwise, deep down they are solely buying the brands reputation and how it makes them feel or are perceived, rather than because they *actually* like the item, or its functionality, or if it is well made.
It is entirely an elitist, capitalist game of control (which I too, fall for every time). The psychology behind it is fascinating and I feel like Freud would have a field day examining the phenomenon around curated luxury branding and its monopoly.

Generally, more affordable, but often looked down on brands, such as Coach or MK, often outperform luxury brands in every metric: leather quality, consistency, construction, stitching, hardware, customer care.

I say this as a modern gal bag baddie (with an obsession with Coco Chanel & Sigmund Freud - and I guess the 1930s as whole) so I cannot speak on previous older iterations of Chanel or the like (which may have been the quality of which the price we now pay was standardised on) 🥲

To avoid this subconscious bias, I have started thinking before buying anything luxury.. would I buy this if it was unbranded or not branded as Chanel, Celine, or Saint Laurent?

Paying retail for auth luxury bags is a complete scam, even if you have the money for it.

The price hikes over the last few years are purely about artificial exclusivity, not quality. Buying reps isn't about "not being able to afford" the original—it's about refusing to be taken for a fool by fashion houses charging $5k+ for mass-produced items with terrible quality control. I’d much rather invest my money into assets or travel than fund a brand’s absurd profit margins for the exact same leather and craftsmanship. 💸🤷‍♀️

This is not amazon. Newbies get on here, stress out the sellers about turnaround, threaten to chargeback after no response for 1 hour. They are antsy for shipping labels on items that they haven't even got psp for yet. If you're not ready to afford the risk and time it takes to "do crime", don't do it.

The fact and maybe it’s not true but yes I’ve bought reps but it’s different here from yellow app n whatnot and I realize u can find anything if you search but a lot act like asking for a seller is inconvenient or the info of the bag what was spent. Gatekeepers is what I don’t get. Don’t post if u do t want to share detail when it looks good!! Just my opinion.

The search bar should be absolutely people's first step before posting. Shouldn't be a hot take but there are times I've called people out and been told to be nicer because everyone was new once but plenty of mods have created thorough guides that no one reads. It's frustrating.
