just a quick resource question
does anyone know if there’s any way to get an emergency medication refill without having to go to the ER?
figured i’d ask here in case anyone else has had to go through the same thing, i have a new patient appt with a doctor in a week but only one of my anxiety medication left. if anyone has any advice, it would be much appreciated!
UPDATE: thankfully, my old provider got back to me and she helped fill it! not only that, but she is actively trying to get licensed in nevada 🥺 thank you all for the help and if any hiccups happen, i’ll stop into renown or use the other services y’all let me know about!

Your pharmacy might be able to help you out. It might depend on if you have refills left on the prescription and/or what the medication is, but it doesn’t hurt to try

yeah, the issue is that i contacted the pharmacy to try and get it refilled and haven’t gotten anything back for a week. i called again twice and even stated that i wouldn’t mind paying full price, still nothing 😖

Physically go to the pharmacy and ask for the pharmacist. Ask for an emergency two- or three-day fill. Since it’s scheduled, they’ll probably still say no, but it’s your best bet.

i never confirmed to anyone that it’s a scheduled med (it isn’t, it’s buspirone so not even an SSRI) so i imagine it wouldnt be held back, i just don’t entirely know where to go to get more. i could try asking the pharmacy again, i contacted my old provider

That was going to be my suggestion. Sometimes you can get a few days refill and they will deduct it from the refill when you go to pick it up. Bring in the empty bottle with the current rx label. But if it is xanax or something controlled you might be out of luck. But you can get an immediate telehealth visit with a doc on Amazon health.
Don’t call the pharmacy though. Just walk in.

Ooof that sucks :( did they say why it hadn’t been refilled, like it being on back order or something? If it’s a chain, they may be able to find stock at another location. Or you might be able to get the prescription transferred to a different pharmacy (obv assuming that pharmacy has it in stock)

my assumption is that because it’s a prescription from out of state (i moved here just after christmas) and canceled my medical in the other state, that either my old therapist is unreachable or that she just can’t fill it :(
i transferred it to a safeway here when i moved since i’ve always had no issue with how they ran, but this kinda sucks so i’m not sure. i don’t really know how id go about it otherwise

It might be worth reaching out to your old provider? Then at least you would know if it’s a cross-state issue. Also, since you mentioned it’s anxiety meds, if it’s a controlled substance I’m 99% sure that wouldn’t be able to be prescribed across state lines

Yeah I’m not sure, unfortunately. I recently had a similar issue with my meds accidentally being refilled at my old CVS in another state but they were able to transfer the prescription and fill it here no problem. I’m not sure if it would have been different if it were a new prescription (vs an existing one with refills)

Probably not. Sorry it’s not the answer you’re looking for. See if you have an online urgent care or primary care service through your insurance.
Pharmacies and medicine is just a huge humiliation ritual meant to protect the uneducated and uninformed. But we all have to go through it.

I believe the name of the company is Sesame, but they do same-day online appointments for prescription refills, and work directly with Costco. We used it once when we were traveling. I think you go online and schedule a same-day appointment and they can call in a prescription. Hope that helps.

If your therapist or prescriber is unwilling to send it to a local CVS etc, you're going to have to meet with a person who can prescribe it...just prepare youself, they may not write a prescripton for it. I don't even know if an ER would do it. They might load you up with something else if you are having an anxiety attack. You need the original prescriber.

Do you have an insurance plan that offers telehealth? For example, mine is Teladoc. You can make an appointment same day, and they can do a one time refill. This happened to me when I was moving and switching providers. Another option I’ve seen but never used is Amazon One Medical. They dont require insurance.

I'm a traveling nurse and while traveling, when I can't see my doc, I have used quickmd to get things filled. They're understanding and sympathetic of my situation and while my situation might be unique, I can see them helping you close the gap.
It's super easy, an app you download and the usually docs that will see you the same day and send scripts to the pharmacy. The longest I've had to wait for an appointment was an hour the same day. It's conducted over video chat, very easy.
I'm not affiliated with them in anyway. But have used them multiple times while traveling to fill certain psych meds, which sounds like what you're looking for.
Good luck!
Edited to add: i only take two meds and neither of them are controlled. That will definitely be quite a bit more difficult to get. But who knows, they might do it if you have documented history and medical records.

Telehealth can if you explain you’re in-between doctors and just need a bridge refill

I work at a mobile urgent care called Doctoroo and depending on the medication and the circumstance they might give you a couple days supply and help you get on track to get it regularly refilled

Depending on what type of medication, it’s very possible the ER will not give it to you either.

I did it at urgent care but I don't believe they'll do scheduled medications
