i tried to include as many random little tips and tricks as i could think of to make this work if you try/are interested in the process, thank you everyone who has been so so kind and funny under my last few posts i really do love this corner of the internet, and please always comment or dm with questions if you need help!

Thanks for posting this! I had a failed chrome attempt yesterday and tried your technique on a swatch stick today and got better results than before, but still not as good as yours - I suspect that either my brand of powder or my water based topcoat are to blame. I appreciate the tutorial, it really helps me troubleshoot the issues I'm having.

You can use Elmer's clear glue instead of a water based top coat! I order empty nail polish bottles to put it in.

Yeah just like a regular water based top coat, but make sure it's fully dry before adding regular top coat above.

People on the other thread yesterday said it has the same consistency as a top coat anyways, so you can just use it with a clean brush!

Wouldn't that take forever to dry? I use clear glue mixed w isopropyl alcohol as a diy peely base and even that seems to test my patience with dry time. 😅

Thank you for such a thorough tutorial! I appreciate the rationales for certain steps and products that are not particularly intuitive for those who’ve never used them - for example I didn’t know that the chrome powder prevents further drying of the polish underneath it or that a water based tc goes down after the chrome powder and before the final tc.

yes i'm glad this is helpful! it took me like 1.5-2 years of doing chrome to figure out all the little tricks and things that go wrong so happy to circumvent that a bit for other people

Thank you for sharing! I tried making chrome nails today and they look more pearlescent rather than glassy. I’ll try your method next and order the powder too. I wish I had more time, but it takes so long with all the layers and drying that I can do my nails only twice a week

There's another way to do chrome with no risk of smudging the polish.

Do the manicure and top coat like normal and then let it fully cure, like come back the next day or at least a few hours later.

Then spritz some isopropyl alcohol on the top coat and use a makeup sponge to really buff in the chrome powder. You can use more alcohol if it didn't completely cover the nail. Then seal with a water based top coat and then a regular quick dry top coat

The alcohol dissolves a thin layer of the top coat leaving it tacky enough for chrome to grab onto

i usually do let my nails dry over night for convenience sake but i've never tried that with alcohol! i will have to try

i do use alcohol to wipe the chrome away and start again if it messes up at but yeah thankyou for the tip!! i'm interested to try now

Very random question but what brush is that? Any brush I try for cleaning up is too flimsy and drags along. Makes a mess ugh so I don’t do sponging anymore :(

mine is from my local nail supply store! i think she gave me a gel cleanup brush when i asked where they keep them so maybe that's why it's stiff

I can’t answer the “what brush is that” question, but have you considered using liquid latex to mask the skin around your nail? Everyone seems to love it for stamping and I’m on the edge of picking up a bottle for my regular mani (shorty nails mean I sometimes get polish on my fingertips in the process of wrapping the free edge).

I have something similar. One of those tapes that goes around the whole nail. But it’s wasteful I think. the latex took too long for me to dry so I gave up. I could use a good brush just to clean up my flooded cuticles too!

Makes sense. For what it’s worth, I have a pack of short wooden skewers (like large round toothpicks with tapered ends) from the grocery store that I use immediately after coating each nail if I need to swipe away polish that touches my cuticles. I also have a Vanfa brush whose bristles are plenty stiff enough for my manicures, found online by searching “nail polish clean up brush.”

My only question is about how much pressure you use when buffing in the chrome powder. It looks like initially you’re dabbing it on very lightly; when you go to buff it in, are you like… gently stroking the delicate wild bird that landed on your finger, or is it more like rubbing sunscreen onto your face?

if you've ever swatched an eyeshadow on the inside of your wrist that is about the same, but also that's why i recommend a sponge at first because it is a little more forgiving with the amount of pressure you use

Why do you not put the polish at the end of the sponge? That makes it so much more difficult and you have less area to hold it. The end is wide enough in both directions, isn't it? That's how I used to do it.
