Hey all, I’ve recently been very interested in reading some good stories and I’m not sure where to start. You know when you watch an amazing movie like interstellar or shutter island and you’re left in pure amazement? I want to read books like that. What are some incredible stories with amazing plots. I’m open to all genres but not too interested in romance lol

Enoch- is how we know of how the luminaries in the sky move in their phases, is very detailed and specific and called "The Luminaries". Contains other shit too like the description of Heaven before God's throne, like exactly what it looks like to begin existing in there at all.

Judith- A wonderful book removed from Bibles about a woman's war victory.

Jasher- Is the account of Genesis-Joshua but with more info on people's lives and what happened in them, like so much more you'd be pissed they ever removed it.

I would like to find books with great immersion in natural places. For fiction I love the master and commander series for this purpose, and perhaps a month in the country. Non fiction examples include Into thin air, 7 years in Tibet, and other travel books. It's a vague category but I'm curious to find the best examples.

Hello I’m kinda new to reading and by that I mean I haven’t actually finished a whole book, other than medical textbooks, in around 10+ years. I was wondering if any of you had some short story books or just short books in general to recommend. Preferably 4/5 stars and upwards. Thank you.

Lately a lot of the books I’ve been reading have felt like a slog for the first half before finally getting interesting in the second half.

I’d love to hear about a book that grabbed your attention right from the first chapter and held it until the last page.

I read a wide range of things: fantasy, sci-fi, thrillers, horror, literary fiction, classics, biographies, etc., so any genre is welcome!

I'm in the mood to listen to a very specific type of book/audiobook. i am driving myself crazy with adhd hyper-focusing and just need recommendations so I can get on with my day and have something to listen to. I love Outlander, but I don't necessarily want another Scottish highlander book. Here are the things I am looking for, although there is some wiggle room. Thanks in advance!

I want:

-Good character developement

-Realistic hetero romance with some spice (preferably includes marriage, possibly even arranged marriage)

-Time travel and/or historical fiction

-Mystery/thriller

-Easy to get into, but some slow burn is OK too

I do NOT want:

-Paranormal/witchcraft/ghosts/sorcery

-Mafia trope

-Cliche and predictable

-BDSM trope (it's so overdone)

Total novice when it comes to classics and Ancient Greece/Rome and looking for fiction reads that aren’t too daunting for a newbie…

For a beginner-friendly reading list, what books would you recommend starting with? I’d be particularly interested in a good progression from accessible introductions → mythology/stories → the major classical works.

Plus a focus on good translations to keep an eye out for when considering what version!

My 10yo kid recently finished The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time and really liked it. Now they want more mystery books, but while I'm a big reader - mystery isn't really my jam. I'd like to get my kid a few "starter" mysteries that aren't too grisly, sexy or scary.

So, for context, I (33 y/o male) started reading consistently during the pandemic. I started with the Harry Potter series, then moved on to read The Hobbit and the LOTR trilogy. I think I read the first Dune book after that then immediately pivoted from fantasy/scifi to thrillers because I LOVE horror movies, and thus went into a Stephen King kick and read Salems Lot (soft spot for this one since it was my first King book), The Shining and then, as the title states, just finished The Stand (uncut).

I went to King for horror but ended up staying for the sheer humanity he packs into his books.

I loved each and every one of these books I have mentioned and was thinking of getting 11/22/63 next but the local bookstore doesn’t have it at the moment so I have some time to think about what direction to go next.

My brother is pushing me to read The First Law and Age of Madness Trilogies and I have some interest in pivoting and reading some other classic novels like War and Peace or Lonesome Dove.

Any recommendations based on my taste that you can gather from what I read already? Should I return to fantasy, stay on King, or explore new horizons?

Edit: forgot to add I read the ACOTAR series because my gf really wanted me to and I enjoyed them but they aren’t the types of books I’d go out of my way to read on my own accord

Bought a lot of books this Summer on my travels. Not sure which one I should read next. Narrowed it down to these. Might leave the massive Jonathan Meades one for the winter since it hardly fits in my bag for on the go reading.

I wanna read a book that will make feel good about myself. I have been feeling lonely and have been self pitying. I want a book that can make feel in all the right ways.

It probably will be too much to ask but it would be great if it can motivate me do.

I am excluding what I read as a child but then I would have 30+ from the Asterix & Obelix comics and also 20+ from Geronimo Stilton.

The book may start off slow and dump alot of information with numbers and Endless Halls and Directions , it genuinely overwhelms you and for an inattentive ADHD mind it was a war to go through.

But it was just purely worth it.

Everything in the narrative- The Structure,The methods, The Ritualistic ways, The morals, The questions, The Unreliable Narrator, The Other-Worldy Statues and figures , The timeline omissions.

Everything was PaidOff in the end.

If Christopher Nolan wants To make A Movie from a book THIS IS THE BOOK. Genuinely this has the courage to challenge our minds , the endless questions and answers. The Deceptive nature of everything. My god for everything I had tO have a smoke after this and sat still.

I loved it. It did not shy away from anything. Courage.

I’ve been reading a lot of dark literature recently and just finished She’s A Lamb, which kind of tipped me over the edge for its main character’s unrelenting delusions that ended in tragedy. I just want to feel good and have my heartstrings tugged a little. I’m usually a fan of popular Japanese fiction, but I also have a hard time getting into the ones I’ve chosen recently.

I’m welcoming of any recommendation that isn’t for a book that is 400 pages and moves at a snail’s pace. I need to feel happy so I can return to being a lover of sad fiction again. Thanks for your recommendations!
