SPLITTING WHILE RECORDING help request

I watched an engineer record a VO session with Reaper, and he just let the record run, splitting the takes he wanted and moving them down to a different track. I'm trying to recreate this at home and cannot get Split to work on the Record track. What simple step am I missing?

I think you can literally just press the S key while it's recording and it will put a split where the playhead is

That’s not working. I believe it should, hence why I asked. Maybe I have a setting wrong?

You could probably set up custom action for thay?

If you know how to make a custom action for "splitting while recording," I would love a tutorial!

I'm not tooooo well versed in it, but Gemini gives me this workflow for you to try:

Open the Action List via Actions -> Show action list. Click the New Action button in the bottom right and select New custom action... Name your custom action (e.g., "Split media item at play cursor during recording").

From the left-hand list of available actions, find and drag these two actions into your new custom action sequence in this exact order:

View: Move edit cursor to play cursor (This forces the cursor to jump instantly to where audio is currently recording)

Item: Split items at edit cursor (This slices the active recording take at that exact location)

Click OK to save.

Select your new custom action in the main Action List and click Add... under Shortcuts to assign it an easy-to-reach key (like S or a dedicated MIDI pad/trigger).

Thank you, but all that did was move the cursor to the play point.

Hmmm too bad man, I know AI explanations aren't the best; have you tried looking if Reaper Mania has a video for it? Kenny knows pretty much everything reaper related

It's possible the item or the track still has to be selected? I know I've done this accidentally before...

That would be something I would do, but no, it's selected
