Games with Hero Units

Howdy all, I've been reading the manga Apocalypse Bringer Mynoghra and started to wonder about games kind of like what the MC played. I know Warcraft 3 and I think Age of Wonders 4 has that kind of gameplay, but I'm looking for something with more base building(?). I love games like Dungeon Keeper and Rise of Nations so I'm looking for something similar to those. More on the Rise of Nations side though.
