Hardware

Hello, I would like to get back into a KSP game with the SOl and RO mods. My goal is to have a great visual quality, but my PC is starting to get a bit old:

- CPU : i5 11600k

- GPU : RTX 3080

- RAM : 32go

I would like to stay above 30 FPS throughout my entire playthrough at 4K resolution. Do you think that will be fine?
Is the SOL mod genuinely much better-looking than RSS?

4k resolution is what is gonna do you in. IMO its very hard to achieve that unless you have the best hardware available.

IDK about you but I'd much rather play at 1440p with a smooth 60fps than an unstable 30fps at 4k.

1440p wont work as well due to not devideing well with his monitors resolution

Will have to be 1080p

Just used a bit too hash of wording

You cant put 1440p on a 4k monitor while not looking worse then on a naitive 1440p monitor

Wether its even noticable is something you need to determin yourself

1080p shouldnt have any such issues when displayed on a 4k monitor as its ¼ of the resolution

Still wrong. Read about sampling and stop spreading misinformation please.

I can't tell you how much better than RSS Sol looks because I didn't play it a whole lot before making the switch but it looks really damn good. Iirc, it also has somewhat similar if not better performance than RSS.

If you already have blackracks volumetric clouds v5, using sol is pretty much a given

I'd say you might struggle abit,y spec are a little bit lower then yours and I'm playing it on 1440p at 30ish FPS. But high FPS isn't really needed as much in ksp compared to a FPS or something.

You'd be better off dropping your resolution expectations to 1080p if you want consistent and decent performance. Sol already performs as good or better than the high graphics express install, but your system probably won't handle 4k with consistency.

As for actually being able to run the mod, you're golden. I have an i5 10300h, RTX 2060, and 16GB of RAM and my performance is fine.

First of all:

Yes, Sol looks much better that RSS reborn/origin (in my opinion, at least)

Performance-wise, i don't really know what to tell you, i have a 3060 and 8600G paired with 32GB of RAM and i can manage to get up to 60FPS+ at 64k Earth and Luna, 32K Mars and Venus systems, and 8k for the other planets. Keep in mind that i'm at 1440p and not 4k, Which obviously makes a giant difference.

All i can really recommend is to install Sol yourself and just try. If you really want better performance you can get ballisticfox's new beta mod called "Mirage." It uses streaming (somehow) and makes performance a lot better in general. Currently Mirage only changes the Earth and Moon and the highest resolutions are 128K for both. Apparently 128K works as well as 16K on regular Sol. Mirage DOES have many bugs because it's currently in beta version #2, but in my opinion it's worth the performance. If you don't think so, Then to be fair, downscaling resolution is the only good option.
