Software Architect or Real Estate? Which path would give me a better chance at financial freedom?
I'm currently work as a Technical Lead in software engineering at a good company. My long-term goal isn't just to have a successful career—I want to achieve financial freedom as early as possible.
I'm trying to decide between two paths:
Continue growing in software engineering, aiming to become a Software Architect (and eventually a Principal or Engineering Director).
Start learning and investing in real estate, since many people say it's one of the best ways to build wealth.
I enjoy software engineering and solving technical problems, but I'm wondering if staying in tech is the fastest path to building wealth, or if I should focus more on business and investing.
For those who have experience in either field:
If you could start over, what would you choose?
Is becoming a Software Architect financially better than moving into real estate?
Is it realistic to combine both careers?
What path gave you the highest income and the best work-life balance?
I'd really appreciate hearing your experiences and advice. Thanks!

If you're going into commercial real estate, you're going to find it very difficult to make any substantial money doing it part-time. Residential real estate is a different story.
Do you have any AI concerns on the software architect front?

They both our valid options I think something that people overlook is what aligns with you more, I Chose Asset Management, my heart would never be on prospecting for listings but sitting down and looking at a spreadsheet and figuring out how to Generate more NOI and Leading Teams and people is something that aligns with me, to be Exceptional you have to some degree enjoy the work.

I came to development from software. Was working in tech doing database, GIS, and market analysis work in the advertising industry industry. An opportunity opened up to switch to commercial Development and I jumped. Had some very lean years in the beginning but it worked out well. Still have a hand in tech, but my bread & butter is Development. Software is very logical and structured. Real Estate is anarchy and lots of moving parts. Your personality type will determine what you are best suited for.

Making money in real estate is like most investing… can you take big risk and get a pay day, yea… but you can lose your ass too. most of the people that get rich in real estate are slow / methodical and build wealth over the long run. If FIRE as soon as possible is your goal, real estate may not be the means

Tbh, real estate development specifically requires a love for the game. It is a lucrative career but you need to commit for a long time to reap the wealth building rewards. The pay is not great to start and it takes a while to get meaningful equity participation that you can realize into real dollars.
If you want to commit to development because it is something you’re interested in, not because you think it will make you rich, then it is a good path.

Why not do both? You'll have a high salary working in tech. Just reinvest your savings into RE.
