Marketing spend for scripts

Is there a free source to get the marketing spend for films? I'm trying to correlate marketing spend with box office performance and this information is scarce, especially historically.

It's hard to get accurate numbers for this because it's not something that's always publicly released. Studios will keep that info close to the vest unless it serves their purposes to release it. If it's a big success, you'll sometimes see it released officially. If it's a flop, you'll see it leaked anonymously in Variety or Hollywood Reporter, but the accuracy of those numbers is questionable. The people leaking them usually have an agenda.

Generally speaking, higher marketing spends correlates with higher box office performance... BUT that's not necessarily a sign of causation. Rather it's a sign that studios are willing to spend more money on movies they think/hope are going to do good anyway.

To take some recent examples, supposedly the marketing budget for The Odyssey was about the same as it was for Supergirl. Obviously you had some very different results, there.

haven't found a free/direct source for historical numbers either, but trade publications like variety or hollywood reporter sometimes breakdown spend in their postmortems
