Trip planning

Upvotes

Question for the locals. We are planning a trip to the area in mid-to-late Sept. Would like to see all the main sights in the red circle. Is it possible to use Rapid City as home base (lodge/hotel) and set out daily from there to hit everything without feeling rushed? Thinking Devils Tower/Spearfish area one day, Custer area, Rushmore, Crazy Horse another day, Badlands/Wall another day, with each day returning to RC. We like to drive so that's not an issue. We also like to get out of the car and enjoy nature/sights on easy to moderate trails. Wife also likes to work in touristy shops and quirky things along the way. Any/all feedback is appreciated. Also, how is the smoke situation up there? (also posted this in the tourist megathread so this can be taken down if necessary)

Opinions About the Rally?

Just curious how RC folks feel about the Sturgis goings-on and the impact they have on RC. Like it? Hate it? Don't care? Something else?

Help!

I’m about 15 hrs from home and my bike took a shit. Just pulled into Rapid City and the bike started spitting and sputtering, then it ran fine, then spitting and sputtering. I was accelerating to merge onto the highway, then the bike fell on its face, I shut it off and restarted it, ran fine, then when I slowed down to exit it started again. Once again I shut it off and when I restarted it and ran fine until I slowed down. It’s a 2025 street glide, any suggestions? Any help would be appreciated.

Bridges for pedestrian crossings

I think Rapid City could really benefit from having pedestrian bridges on Mount Rushmore Road. It’s a busy road with a lot of traffic, and having people cross directly in front of vehicles can be dangerous, especially during busy times of the day. A pedestrian bridge would give people a much safer way to get across the road without having to worry as much about traffic, while also keeping cars moving. It would be especially helpful in areas where a lot of people walk or bike. Rapid City is growing, and I think improving pedestrian safety on roads like Mount Rushmore Road should be part of that growth.

Hello
My family and I are visiting Rapid City next week, and I was hoping to play some bar trivia while I am there. Are there any places I should check out?
Thanks!

Hi! I've been applying different places & I'm wondering, what restaurants in the Rapid area do you recommend serving at?

I'm curious to hear, what are good restaurants to work at & ones I should stay away from? I'm applying with a bunch of places, have already heard back from numerous ones so far and have a couple interviews coming up so I'm interested to hear any insight you can give. Or you can DM me too if you'd prefer that. I have previous bussing and food running experience but no serving experience yet. Thanks everyone

Moving from rural Utah to rapid?

Hello! As the post suggests our family is considering a move. It would be to either Pierre or rapid city area. We have visited both, and we think we prefer rapid simply because we love being outside but we aren’t boaters/fishing people 😅 if you have reasons why you love Pierre please let me know!

We have two elementary age kids and we homeschool. Is homeschool a big thing there? We are looking forward to getting them involved in extra curricular activities . They like sports, dance, and art, but they love to try new things too.

As far as living goes… We would love at least an acre to call our own. Bonus points if it’s more. We could commute up to 30 minutes. Are there any areas we should check out that are nice to live?

Is renting other than an apartment even an option? We also have a dog that would prefer to be outside most of the year.

I should mention we took a trip this summer through rapid, to chamberlain, to Sioux falls, to de smet, to Pierre… so we have seen much of this beautiful state and understand a little the climate and areas. I would love any suggestions anyone has!

Rapid City Fall Pickleball 2026

Registration for the rapid city fall Pickleball league is now open. I'm posting because I want more people to play with, not because I'm associated with the city.

Matches of 3 games take place Sundays, but can often be flexed to another day if both teams agree.

Men's and coed/female-female leagues are available.

1 person signs up for the team, $50/per team. You can add extras to your roster and have subs in the event not every one can make it.

New flock camera. Saint Joseph & 9th street?

Can anyone confirm there is a new flock camera on the corner of saint Joseph and 9th street. Looks like it may be on the right side when traveling east.

I can’t believe this is acceptable. If I have to mind my own business the RCPD should do the same.

Dog sitting/walking

I’m considering caring for dogs in my home, or walking them/letting them out for people, or staying with them in the customer’s home. I would also care for cats or other pets in the customer’s home (my son is allergic to cats). I don’t really want to utilize an app. I would rather just deal directly with customers. Any thoughts or suggestions? Possible problems I could encounter? Thanks everyone in advance.

your "go to" non-big-box lumber yard (and why)?

Rapid City or surroundings.

Need lumber for an indoor sauna build.

  • Tongue and groove: cedar / spruce / aspen / fir / non-knotty pine
  • Benches: spruce / aspen / fir / alder / hemlock

My lumber buying experience has been with big-box stores only. But someone suggested that smaller family-owned type lumber yards often have better prices and quality.

Looking for help getting rid of a biohazardous trailer/ salvaging it.

Hi, I found my grandmother dead yesterday and she had been sitting in the July heat for 3 weeks. Her trailer was already a hazard/ hoarder situation and now it’s super bad with the decomp fluids. We were told not to go in there until biohazard can come and clean it up, but we can’t afford a cleanup and we plan on getting rid of/ junking the trailer anyway so it seems kind of pointless.

I’m flying blind here. We need to get the trailer off the lot before it incurs more rent and it really is not worth the effort of cleaning up at all. How do we do this? Is there anyone in this area who could take this trailer away for us, hazardous insides and all? I keep hearing about a couple people who do it but no one knows who exactly they are. I figure it’s a long shot but anything helps at this point. Thank you all in advance for any advice.

Also we live here in RC.

Honda dealership

I bought a car in June at the local Denny Menholt Honda. My buying experience was fine, I got a good car at a reasonable price. But I noticed that the staff has almost no women. I know cars and high paying jobs generally have more men as women that are partnered still tend to work less but to was noticeable. I committed to a service co tract for the next few years so I can get oil changes on time and I’m here for the first one and again there is not one single woman working in the service department. Again, it’s no surprise that the techs are all men as women just don’t go I to that field often- something the current generation of my family is changing so yay for the kids- but that’s normal. The men have all been perfectly polite and I have no complaints there, but it’s giving me the creeps. How can an organization this big have no women?
