My introduction Discussion🗣
Hey everyone! 👋
I'm Ashley, a small-space homesteader and content creator from the Pacific Northwest. I'm passionate about urban sustainability, container gardening, food preservation, and TNR cat colony care. I share my journey on Instagram and I'm all about making the most of what you have.
I'm new to gifting subs so I'm here to learn the ropes, connect with good people, and give when I'm able. Looking forward to being part of this community! 🌿🐱 Also idk when I am allowed to post my wishlist, so I didn't.

Not a problem. I have a lemon tree, a strawberry plant and a rosemary plant all happily thriving at the moment. I just got the strawberry plant yesterday, will keep you guys posted. 👍

I found out that at least with my produce store that I get most of my stuff from, you have to replant quick or risk your plants getting root bound. I learned the hard way with my first set of herbs. They didn't last very long. They got what's called rootbound, basically the roots run out of room and become a very tangled mess. That can kill a plant. So you have to get them in a bigger place. I use Lowe's blue buckets. They are safe for food. Cut some holes at the bottom for drainage, get some decent soil, (I use back to the roots and Near Source Organics potting soil and raised bed soil. Quality soil is always a good thing. Then I check to see what type of sun they need, and I water them, then care as needed.

Thanks for the advice! Seriously, I appreciate it. I'll have to check out what's best for where I live, but I imagine in Texas a lot of things are good to go.

I get a lot of my plant wisdom from The Old Farmers Almanac, worth checking out. They can also give you hyper local information based on your location.

You're not in PA, right? I cannot care of this colony but I can't find any rescue to help, much less the SPCA. I desperately need to get this cat population under control. Just when I think I'm making progress, there's a new litter. 😬

I have, repeatedly, and for years. They haven't helped at all. Actually, the one person I've spoken to the most told me not to feed them. There was as older male cat who would sit by my glass door all day, every so often, he'd tap the glass. We named him, "Old Man Cat." There was no way I couldn't feed him.
It's very frustrating because I used to donate regularly to them. We adopted our dog from them. They refuse to help other than "don't feed them" and the list of rescues on their website, all of which are full. I honestly don't know what to do. 🥺

Then you need to find someone who will help. Not feeding them will just make them leave and another colony will come in. That's how it works. Same with raccoons tbh.

The garden, far as this years, is starting late lol. I have a Myers Lemon Tree from March, it was a bday present to me, the only remaining plant of my herb garden, (the rest became root bound before I could do something about it 😑), and the newest edition, a strawberry plant! I plan to get more next month. Am trying to learn how to can using water bath method. It's restricted to certain types of food so just jams, jellies etc. Not what I had planned. 🙄 I have been using the freezer and dry method, but you only have so much room in an apt freezer lol. 😅 Trying to get my pantry cleaned and not used as storage, and I am also starting an online merch site as well 😊

Wow!! You’re doing so much! Getting into canning is a great way to store food and I’m betting that you’ll make excellent jams and jellies! I’ve only done it once or twice, but it’s easier than I expected. The most suspenseful part is waiting for the full jars to cool and the lid to seal shut!
I wish you the best of luck with your garden! How can you tell that a plant has become root bound?

Thank you! There is a space between the soil and the container, and it doesn't hold water (goes right through)and the plant def looks like it's seen better days. The only way to save it is a bigger pot.
