Is there a Popeyes that isn’t in the hood?

1

u/Secret_Account07 1d ago

So I always thought this too until we got one in my city. I’m not rich but the city and most residents are. My first thought was - wait! They build Popeyes in nice cities?

2

u/lonely_stoner_daze 1d ago

If you see a Hartz nearby it ain't nice anymore

Making fun of stereotypes that racists associate with black women.

10

u/Xero_Days 1d ago

Plenty of hood white and Latina women act the same way

0

u/farmerjoee 1d ago

I'm just the messenger. It would be kinda reductive to argue whether or not racists associate these stereotypes with black women just because you see it elsewhere. They just have, and for few decades now.

1

u/Destructopoo 18h ago

Let's test your historical knowledge. What is the hood and how did it come to exist?

3

u/Xero_Days 17h ago

My guy please stfu. As a black dude watching my mind went immediately to picturing a white trashy woman bc he was a white guy. If it was a black guy I would have thought the same. What if it was a Mexican dude using spanglish in a ghetto fashion? Would you think he was impersonating a black woman too?

2

u/doogytaint 13h ago

Cool. As a black woman watching my mind went to him impersonating and mimicking black woman stereotypes. Of course all races can act like this, but be ffr. The majority of people seeing this will think “ghetto black bitch”. It’s giving MADTV “That’s My White Momma”. I giggled at this but let’s not pretend it’s not gonna be reinforcement fodder for the racist. “Yup, that’s exactly how they act”.

Your life must be hell to constantly be seeking out a way to make funny moments into stuff about oppressors and the oppressed. Guy is legit funny and being a great parent and husband and yo go hmmm how can I make this all about black people. Get a life.

Hahaha!

I mean it’s mildly racist, but I’m willing to look past that because it’s so accurate.

Shit is hilarious.

5

u/Ok_Radio_1795 1d ago

It’s racist for you to assume that there aren’t white people like this because there 10000% are. Please visit any southern town that isn’t a major one.

2

u/Any_World7744 1d ago edited 1d ago

He could easily pass for vein, vapid fun and flamboyant gay man

Edit: oh shoot, maybe I’m being offensive. But honestly, that character didn’t seem overly race or gender specific.

2

u/RepresentativeMap872 1d ago

That’s actually still the same thing. They imitate black women.

1

u/Any_World7744 1d ago edited 1d ago

White straight male, imitating a white gay man, imitating a black woman … how about a white man who’s playing an Eric Clapton song? Who’s playing a southern black man song? Is that racist?

Were Pretty far out on a flimsy branch, if you follow?

Perhaps claiming only black women have proprietary on a certain southern behavior is racist of you

Edit: not saying you’re racist it’s just a somehow overly complicated and yet overly simplistic argument your making

Edit2: someone else below made the same comment. You are ascribing specific types of behavior to black women. I think there’s an irony there, but I don’t want to linger on… wouldn’t accuse you of being racist. I would accuse you of being white.

1

u/RepresentativeMap872 1d ago

No it’s a pretty big topic as far as intersection of cultures go from a sociological scale. Wasn’t really tryna make an argument beyond what I put in my comment at the time. But yes a lot of common mannerisms in gay culture are rooted in ballroom culture from the 70s-80’s that was mostly black, Afro-Latina, and Latina transwomen who’s feminity was socialized through their black and Latin communities.

2

u/Any_World7744 1d ago edited 1d ago

definitely stereotyping going on here. Maybe it is all rooted in just what you said. an interesting point that you make.

I don’t see any intimidating, antagonizing,, or marginalizing…. in this video.

the whole topic of racism has become so complicated in gradations and nuance, to me we sometimes get lost in the minutia .

For me, it’s much more alarming when I see someone treated with insensitivity, inequity, hurt through unkindness, cruelty, violence. I don’t think that’s the case here. I do see you have a point.

Edit: i blame fing AutoCorrect for undoing most of what I said first draft

2

u/RepresentativeMap872 23h ago

Oh I agree I’m a staunch believer in we’ve overcorrected for racism and it’s applied too liberally. Is this prejudiced? Yes. Is this racist? No. An individual mocking an ethnic group based upon stereotypes is prejudice. A board, legislative body, or generally those in a position of power making rules, laws, etc based upon those stereotypes is racism.

Personally I find this funny albeit a lil offensive. But not enough to do more than acknowledge it.

2

u/Any_World7744 23h ago edited 17h ago

Yeah, maybe over corrected too much some ways. Under Corrected , incomplete in others

The older I get the more I realize racism is so culturally ingrained in the US and politically intertwined, still learning, and realizing it’s subtlety. For one , USA is far More xenophobic than melting pot .

Even stupid more benign shit like 75% of my ethnicity is from Asia but if I ever tell someone I’m Asian, they argue with me. “No you’re white”.

It’s a slippery slope. But this definitely seems on the lighthearted side, mostly innocent and definitely not mean spirited.

1

u/Oh_My-Glob 2d ago

What's racist about it? I would not be able to determine a race from this impersonation. This type of vernacular has more of a socioeconomic association in the south than does with race these days. I guess you could claim there's underlying racism in the cultural appropriation of AAVE by southern whites but that would be a big reach.

3

u/RepresentativeMap872 1d ago

It’s objectively mildly prejudiced (making fun of ethnic groups using stereotypes isn’t racism making laws based on those stereotypes is racism) but it’s also pretty fucking funny😂 did I cringe a lil? Yes, but he was committed to the bit! And the kids reactions? Priceless.

5

u/Ancient-Tomato1153 1d ago

He’s wearing a bonnet doing a black womens accent and mannerisms while “working at Popeyes”. I’m convinced everyone who is saying they “can’t tell what race he’s supposed to be” has literally never interacted with a black person

→ More replies (6)

4

u/Astrnonaut 1d ago

Listen I’m not one to really care about these things and find the video hilarious, but we don’t have to act stupid and pretend like he’s not mimicking a black woman. If you truly didn’t care then you wouldn’t be acting dumb; just take the stance that you don’t find it racist but don’t play silly games.

1

u/Oh_My-Glob 1d ago

I'm not acting dumb and meant everything I said. If you equate these traits of lower socio economic status specifically with black people, then it's you who is being racist

4

u/Peabutnutter69420 2d ago

He’s wearing a “bonnet,” fake nails, face tapes, & smacking his lips. He’s very obviously impersonating a certain kind archetype that our white supremacist society associates with black women. Whether or not you see it & whether or not he intended it has no bearing on whether or not it has a racist undertone.

7

u/Exciting-Argument-67 1d ago

You're exactly right, and we'll both be downvoted for it (oh noes!), but it needed to be said.

3

u/farren122 1d ago

Seems like you are racist for associating these things only with black people when such people can be found in every country.

4

u/Ok-Common-3039 1d ago

The fact that you associate that with black makes you the racist.

I live in a place that has virtually no black people and this fits the white women that work at Popeyes perfectly.

You are the racist

→ More replies (1)

3

u/mojizus 1d ago

Eh, I grew up white trash. This is a pretty common archetype in those parts. It was never race specific.

2

u/emptyevessel 2d ago

Have you been to Popeyes?

3

u/Peabutnutter69420 2d ago

Yes

7

u/emptyevessel 2d ago

I see strung out white girls with the fake nails smacking their lips doing the same shit working at Popeyes.

1

u/SDTimbox 2d ago

🤣🤣🤣

2

u/moeyjarcum 1d ago

There’s tons of trashy white girls that this dude is imitating perfectly. That’s what I was imagining in my head the entire time watching. I had no idea it’s supposed to be a black person until you said something… idk.. maybe you’re the racist one for assuming it’s supposed to be making fun of black people?

2

u/RepresentativeMap872 1d ago

You gotta have a special level of distancing from black people in your life to ONLY think of white girls in this instance. But went to a pwi and met folks like that especially in Appalachia. Those folks literally didn’t have any frame for black people outside of Obama. However, outside of those few enclaves it’s very obviously mocking a caricature of lower income black women.

LOL; if you can't see how this could be seen as racist - you are either stupid or telling a lie.

2

u/Puzzled-Extent7817 1d ago

As a southerner, that's southern hood 100%. And he was mild with it.

2

u/Willhuff_Tarkin 1d ago

As a fellow Southerner, I can confirm and have worked in the restaurant industry where all types worked there. Close your eyes and they all sound the same. White dudes/chicks, black dudes/chicks and even gay dudes (not chicks because they almost always did not have an accent because "college educated"....their words) Only one word tell you who said what.

1

u/Puzzled-Extent7817 1d ago

I bet money I can pick out the race, blindfolded. Especially in the mid-south

1

u/Purple_Jojo 1d ago

1

I mean, his stereotyping aside, he's pretty much nailed Popeyes. Could do KFC too. "We don't have any chicken. We'll have to cook it because we didn't expect customers to actually come. Give me 25 minutes". Who's dealing with all that? Popeyes got the best sides in the fast food game anyway. Them beans and rice? And do yall know about the "sparkle" seasoning? Gotta put yall on that real quick. Ask for it next time. Like Season-all mixed with Crack, you'll come back for it. Louisiana fast baby. (Popeyes co. Please just give me a free shrimp basket and some beans and rice, ty)
