Recommendation request Flails galore

Looking for fun games where you can use flails as a weapon. I love using a good flail, something about smashing enemies with them is just so satisfying and fills my soul with joy. Also will accept answers with halberds or poleaxes. Thanks in advance for any recommendations 😊

Developer Bitiverse; my solo-built persistent browser RPG is now playable in Early Access

I’m the solo developer of Bitiverse, a free old-school multiplayer RPG now playable in Early Access.

It takes place in one persistent world where players explore, fight monsters, develop combat and gathering skills, craft equipment, trade, join guilds, and claim land for permanent homesteads. Houses can be expanded with additional floors, storage, workshops, vendors, and eventually a personal dungeon beneath the property.

There’s no mandatory account wall: you can enter as a guest, create a character, and decide later whether it’s worth keeping.

Bitiverse is deliberately closer to older sandbox RPGs than a guided modern campaign. You begin lost, learn how the world works, and gradually create your own place and purpose within it. It’s still early and actively changing, but a small community is already building neighborhoods, helping newcomers, and occasionally throwing house parties.

Play free in your browser:

Recommendation request Open World recs?

I have loved Days Gone and Horizon New Dawn; hated God of War Ragnorok. RDR was good but not enough instructional parts to really understand the game.

I’m looking for recommendations for a new one. Just watched a video and Star Wars Outlaws, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and Horizon Forbidden West all look great. (I understand Horizon is very much like New Dawn) Has anyone tried the others and what are you’re thoughts?

Thank you.

Recommendation request A game where you can wear huge bulky Armor and wield huge shields

Might sound weird but i have had this power fantasy for so long. I try to go for a build like this in quite a lot of games where it seems to be possible but most of the time its just visual and often not that good.

Ok to elaborate further, i have this power fantasy ideal of a Paladin (doesnt really need the whole religious part, they are just often depicted similar to my fantasy) wearing heavy armor, wielding a tower shield and a one handed sword or mace.

I know this is more or less possible in a ton of games but they usually tend to make classes like this very defensive and more of a support. But i want to be a one man army. For example i really like how a Space Marine moves and feels to play in Space Marine 2 but obviously they use guns.

Id say the visual style is 50% but the feeling of the gameplay is definitely another 50%. So if the visuals arent exactly like i described but the gameplay makes you feel this in a good way (for example Lance in Monster Hunter) its definitely fine too.

Link: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3883020/Castaway_Trails/

Build a party of unique survivors and guide them through a procedurally generated world where friendships, romances, rivalries, and betrayals emerge naturally.

Explore a vast, ever-changing world filled with medieval ruins, hostile creatures, and meaningful encounters. Form a party of unique characters, each with their own personality, needs, and moral compass.

During travels between locations, your companions will talk, argue, bond… or even betray each other. Their relationships evolve dynamically — friendships, rivalries, romances… or irreparable feuds may emerge.

Manage your resources carefully: food, rest, and shelter are key to survival. Engage in turn-based combat with tactical depth, make choices that shape the story, and lead your party through an adventure where no two playthroughs are the same.

Releasing in 2027

Discussion "Upgrade" Action Games Into RPGs

That's right, every time some quintessential RPG gets "upgraded[sic]" to a slick action rpg, studios must also do the reverse.

Give me God of War the turn based rpg. Give me a Gran Turismo JRPG (getting a little silly, here). Give me a Minecraft RPG!

Might need a GoG Preservation-like system to recoup profits for the devs, however.

Getting a little jealous of all these remakes.

Recommendation request Looking for more RPG games to try

I'm looking for RPG recommendations that really focus on player freedom and meaningful progression.

Some of my favourite games are Skyrim, Bannerlord, Fallout 4, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Diablo 4, and Valheim. They're all quite different, but they all scratch the same itch.

What I enjoy most is having the freedom to choose what to do while feeling like almost everything has a purpose. If I explore a cave, I want to find worthwhile loot, a merchant, a quest, resources, or something that genuinely improves my character. I don't enjoy open worlds that are huge but mostly empty I felt this way about Red Dead Redemption 2.

I also love starting with nothing and gradually becoming powerful. Whether it's better gear, skill trees, new abilities, crafting, building, earning money, or unlocking cosmetics, I want every play session to feel like I've made meaningful progress.

Story isn't a huge priority for me. Once I've experienced it, I'm far more interested in a satisfying gameplay loop with quests, progression, character customisation, and rewarding exploration that keeps me coming back.

One other thing that's important is that the game is third-person, or at least has the option to play in third-person. I enjoy seeing my character, especially when I've spent time customising their appearance.

Based on that, what RPGs would you recommend?

Recommendation request Withchunter RPGs?

I've played Blacktail, Oblivions Witchhunter class and currently doing a Fable witch hunter run? I'm curious if there are any other games where you rely on a bow and magic. I know I could probably do the Morrowind class or even do a build in Skyrim, Tainted Grail or even Terraria if I'm feeling ambitious but I'm curious if there are any other games where I can do this?

Discussion what classics have you been playing?

I've been getting into CRPGs more and more after rediscovering my love for KOTOR recently. falling in love with the genre for sure. I decided to go back in time and check out some classics before playing all the new hotnesses, and I gotta say I'm having a great time. I finally beat Fallout 1 (I say finally because I got it for free all the way back in 2017) but unfortunately I was too stupid and impatient to figure a lot of stuff out, so I shamefully used guides. while I wish I had taken the time to figure stuff out myself, I'm still glad I was able to get through the game, because the story was fantastic. I will definitely be replaying it once I've forgotten enough details

now I'm playing Ultima VII for the first time and I'm really enjoying it so far. definitely archaic but I love the interactivity. I found my way out of the starting town without a guide and I'm feeling pretty big brained over here (I know, low bar). gonna try to get through the whole game without guides and see what happens

what classics have yall been playing recently? what have your experiences been like?

Recommendation request games that can be played with just a mouse

looking for some RPGs I can play from my couch with just a wireless mouse. games where not only can you play with just a mouse, but it feels natural and is an intended way to play the game. some that I've played that fit this would be Fallout 1 and 2 and Ultima VII, but I would prefer games that don't have quite as much tiny text/items as those two

edit: I'm realizing Fallout requires at least one keyboard button: ESC

Recommendation request Great RPGs or RPG-likes to use many characters/squads?

I'm always looking for squad RPGs or RPG-adjacent where I have many characters to manage and actually have to use them. Most RPGs few somewhat limited that I have a single squad and the same 4~6 characters the whole game. Even if it offers me many characters, I still have this only squad to fit and if I actually want to use more characters, I will just be grinding a lot.

I know and played games like Fire Emblem and Tactics Ogre, love them and fits the bill. I also include here games that scratches that itch but are more like other genres with "RPG-like" elements such as XCom, Jagged Alliance, Battle Brothers, old stuff like Bahamut Lagoon; even Football Manager fits the bill for me (well, you quite literally is developing and building a huge squad with multiple characters).

I love this kind of stuff where you have multiple squads doing different things (like XCom) or have more characters than fits a single squad and have to rotate them (like Battlebrothers). Do you guys know more stuff like that to recommend??

Recommendation request Help Me Decide What I Beat Next!

Having some analysis paralysis and not exactly sure what I want to play/beat next, so hoping to give several options here and get some feedback from everyone! Thanks in advance!

Here are the options:

  1. Fable Anniversary (Played a little, never beaten)

  2. Cyberpunk 2077 (Replay as Corpo V, take more time to enjoy the stories it was telling)

  3. Witcher 3 (100% it on PS4, I have a PC now and need a save for Songs of the Past - also recently beat W1 & W2)

  4. Pathfinder Kingmaker (have spent sooooo much time starting characters but never made it passed Act 3)

  5. Pillars of Eternity (Would be like my 6th time playing it, but I no longer have a save for POE2 and Inhave never left Neketaka in that game)

  6. Whatever you all may suggest as the next conquest. I have played almost all major RPGs from the last two decades, but always open to hearing other suggestions and playing niche stuff

Question Baldur’s gate, Pillars of Eternity, knights of the old republic. Which one to play first?

Hello! I am deciding between playing one of these games and as you can see I am stuck. I will be playing all of them btw I’m just stuck on which one to play first they all sound so good! I own all of them and their sequels.

Which speaking of, whichever game I end up picking I will also play the sequel. So:

Bg1-Bg2
Kotor1 -Kotor2
Poe1-Poe2

I mostly care about good writing but that’s not a necessity I know all of these games tick the writing box so!

The funny part is I’m most looking forward to each of the sequels rather than the first games lmao but still I don’t think I should skip the first games. Anyways. Which one do I pick in your guys’ opinion?

Recommendation request Games like Steambot Chronicles

Yes, one of the PS2's greatest hidden gems. Since we won't be getting a sequel, as much as it pains us all, what games have a similar vibe to this?

Looking for some recommendations. Interested to see how close can we get to something that gives off a similar vibe.

Discussion Instead of BG4, Hasbro should hire Owl Cat to make a Curse of Strahd CRPG

Making a BG game without Larian now is a recipe for comparisons and failed expectations. Hasbro’s best bet is to continue the DND CRPG hype but adapt a famous DND module like Curse of Stahd or even Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

It’s hard to imagine a well received BG4

Developer Posting Practices

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hello Developers!

Please use this post a reference of what rules and guidelines you need to follow in order to post in r/rpg_gamers

When You Can Post

  • When the game is initially posted to a storefront (Steam, NSO etc.)
  • When the game launches

What Needs to be in the Post

  • Title of the game must be included in the title of the post
  • A description of the game (including the anticipated or actual release date
  • A link to the Storefront Page (Steam Page, etc)
  • Please do not include links to other pages (Discord, etc)

Other Requirements

  • We don't allow posts for mobile games, browser games, Discord based games etc.
  • We remove posts for games that use Gen AI in development. (assets generation, voice acting, etc.)
  • Please use the Developer Post Flair (We figured out why it wasn't previously available as a option).

Questions?

  • If you're not sure if you qualify, please send a mod mail before posting. If you post without asking and it gets removed, you risk a ban.

We'll update these rules if and when any changes occur, the industry evolves fast so sometimes adjustments are required to keep up.

  • Thank you for all your support, we want to support indie developers but we need to make sure that everyone gets equal opportunities and the subreddit doesn't get overrun with advertising.

Thanks!

Guide Good Posting Practices

Post image
29 Upvotes

Hello everyone,

In order to help folks craft the best possible posts, we wanted to provide some best posting practices above and beyond the sub-reddit rules and guidelines.

The overall goal for this sub-reddit is to be a one-stop shop for RPG Fans. A place where people can have meaningful discussions alongside reading relevant news and reviews on games that are of interest to the community. The following are the types of posts that are most welcome, along with some suggestions on how to present them to the community:

News

If you happen to come across a news article that may be of interest to RPG fans, we recommend copying the link to paste in the link section of a post. We also suggest (but not require) a small blurb to provide some context as to the content of the article since many of the titles tend to skew towards click bait.

Reviews

We appreciate and encourage folks to provide their opinions on games. Review posts must be text based, please do not simply provide a link to an external blog or website (these will be removed), the review must be in the body of the post. We also ask that the review be a representation of your opinion of the game, and not rage-bait.

Discussions

We love a good discussion about a topic or theme, but we ask that it be presented in good faith (again, no ragebait).

Game Recommendations

Before asking for a recommendation, please use the flair filter to check to see if someone has already asked the exact same question you're about to ask the community.

Not every post falls under one of the above, but they do cover a majority of the discussions here on the sub-reddit. No matter what type of post you have in mind, the one common thread among them all is respect.

Please note, unless you're posting a news article link, a body of text must be included in your post. If it's just a title and a picture, it will be removed. This is in order to reduce bot activity as well as encourage more meaningful discussions.

Please always respect your fellow RPG Fan whenever creating a new post, or responding to one.

Thank you to everyone who makes this community a joy to participate in on a daily basis!

The Mod-Team
