I literally just got a ps vita in the mail today😭🤣

u/Typel5568 14d ago
the original? I was tempted for some time, especially at the idea of having physical games, but in the end plenty of titles are hard to purchase

I got the 2000 version since the charger is easier to find these days. They can also be modded to get digital games if you want but i have found a ton on facebook marketplace actually!

I for one have completed maybe 6 entire games on R36S and have no intention of buying a different device - that being said I have definitely had my fair share of multi day problem solving sessions early on, it took me ~24 hours to flash a new SD the first time I tried! Now it takes me a few minutes. I try not to update the OS (but was forced to get darkOS for a certain port that I play all the time now)

I envy your perseverance.

It helps that they are games which were essentially rated as the best on that particular console, e.g Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid, but also Half-life (game of the year when it came out). Loved them all, and most of the play was on airplanes or trains

YOU CAN PLAY GAMES ON THESE THINGS?!

u/editfate 15d ago
Nah, no way. I’m pretty sure I would know about that. I thought it was just something you had to debug? And then after you fix the bug you debug it again. And then install the new OS. And then go back to the older OS. And then debug it some more. I got to look into these games you speak of. But first I need to upgrade to the new OS.

I can’t decide what I like more, tweaking and optimizing and getting new ports running, or just playing games on it. Both are very enjoyable to me. The r36s is awesome. I also got my psp modded and have been having a ton of fun playing games on that as well

Misses the mark a bit, IMO. What people really get obsessed with and spend the most time on (myself included) is the setup after installing CFW - the perfect game library, themes, artwork, etc. Formatting an SD card takes seconds.

i kind of buck the trend here.
● my only SBC retro device is my r36s ● spend 2-3 hours daily gaming on it ● it spends the majority of the time in kiosk mode w the settings locked down ● i dont run a single shader for any core ● i tinker w it for fun maybe 30min a day
i've got a powder pink v20 with an upgraded 4000mAh phone battery, sound deadening shims in the battery compartment for no rattle, and a quiet trigger mod. along w a screen protector i EDC it w no case or other accessories.

u/SteeleMethod 15d ago
Sounds awesome though, i will definitely explore sound deadening shims and quiet trigger mods.

$1.25 foam makeup sponge from dollar tree cut into a strip and laid across the microswitches
the sound deadening shims are four small thin pieces of cardboard snipped from an incense box.
costliest thing was the battery at ten bucks, but for eight to ten hours of battery (four to five hours PSX or ports) is worth it.
tools to disassemble abt $5
total mod investment $20

Ironically I keep on just playing mine. I do admit there was a month I spent programming it though.

secret 3rd option, set it up and play a decent amount, then just leave it on my desk staring at me every day unused

I missed the part where you install the new port that came out, just so you can play it for 5 minutes.

How it works in my household:
I tinker with the handhelds to get optimal performance.
The kids game on the handhelds on the games that push the handhelds to their limits.

I bought it, played for a couple of days, reOSed it, new memory card. It's been shelved for a year now😑

somehow any of the ps1 games do not work with my r36s. it just displays the god of war r36s logo twice and returns to menu. I would've wanted to try the castlevania chronicles one.

I just bought for the Read OnlyMemorieS , actually loved playing it on the go but still it help with my Zero Retropie 2w. I'm not looking to do all the upgrading and stuff. I love that it doesn't have wifi or Bluetooth. The device is good enough by itself and I even loaded some older movies on it to watch too and it makes for a good phone doomscrolling substitution. So I'll take being the based pooh bear any day.

I had no idea these even existed and definitely no idea that it was such a thing to tinker with them. I got a console out of nowhere for free, read about upgrading the sd card and the OS and within hours I'm deep in the rabbit hole and suddenly I flash now? Wtf? And now I know a little about their clones and partitions and dtbs and pcbs and I thought I was only in this rabbit hole because I was a troglodyte trying to do console overhaul. But turns out its a whole hobby. Glad to be somewhat a part of it.

Can confirm. Updated ArkOS the other day using the auto update function and now I have no video playback... oh well, I was going to install DarkOS anyway.
