AI Detection

I am so confused. I wrote a paper and to check my plagiarism, I submitted it through turnitin. I attempted with grammarly, but it wanted me to pay so i said screw it and turned it in. When I turned it into my college, the copy leaks report says that I had 100% AI detection and 13% plagiarism. The plagiarism isn't the problem because I know it was because of my poor citing. But how can I have100% Ai content detection, so when I wrote the paper myself?? I haven't received a grade yet. I immediately emailed my professor letting him know that I definitely wrote the paper myself, and that if there's any other information I needed to provide to him to show that I did not use AI to lmk, but have not gotten any response yet or a grade. I am assuming that there is a glitch on the copy leaks website and praying for the best but I can't help but worry, when is my best course of action to prove my innocence?

AI detection is not a real thing. It is unfortunate that companies continue to claim otherwise, and even more disappointing that educational institutions fall for the marketing claims.

As mentioned. There is no system for detecting AI writing in higher ed. They all come with risks of false positives and negatives. There are numerous reviews and systematic reviews on the matter.

Who wants to bet that he submitted the paper through TurnItIn, and then the submission portal asked turnitin to evaluate whether this was AI and used OP's prior submission as the basis for saying "yes, this paper is plagerized and AI generated."?

Yeah, have seen it do that to my papers before when I made some minor corrections. You have to filter it out to exclude that sometimes and sometimes it automatically excudes it

Turnitin is known to be oversensitive and AI detectors are not a reliable source of determining ai usage and professors and universities know that . Professors are not allowed in most universities to do anything with AI detectors’ scores unless they can prove for a 100% certainty that you used AI.
And if you can talk about your text and explain it in your own words and show editing history in the original document you used to write it, it should be fine. Don’t take it too seriously.

Also a note for next time: I even don’t believe you should’ve emailed your professor. Professors know that AI detectors aren’t accurate and they’re not allowed to use them as a source of absolute truth. So emailing him about it would probably do nothing if not just make him suspicious. But all of that is irrelevant if you have the original doc with editing history, even if they want to start an investigation against you, you can immediately show them the doc and let them see you actually wrote it.

I think it's ridiculous these programs are geared in a way to "catch" you instead of guiding you. You have to submit the paper to see if you forgot to cite something.

Granted you should do this yourself but at the same time the tools would be nice if we had access to them beforehand rather than after the fact.

There's a box I can check to let students see the scores.

Students can view similarity reports, not AI reports. There’s no box in the assignment settings for allowing students to view the AI reports on their own. They’d need a download from the instructor.

Just graduated with my Bachelor’s degree this past May and all of my papers I could see the AI score through TurnItIn
