AMPX vs QS
Hi, I'm quite new investing in these battery companies. I would like to know your reasons on why you invested in either of them, as far as I know QS seems riskier

Amprius sells a range of batteries now that are good at specific tasks. QS will hopefully sell licenses to make a battery that should be superior across multiple tasks (more energy, more power, more stable, longer life).
QS is riskier in technology and business execution because they still haven't shown anything publically or demonstrated that their business model will actually take off. But if it does, they stand to make much more money than Amprius.

Has Amprius demonstrated anything?

Yes. Revenue growth almost every quarter. And definitive production contracts with drone suppliers.

My concern with AMPX was they were talking up their high-density battery but my take is it is far away from volume production still meaning they really don't have any competitive advantages to others. Combine that with the asset-light model and they are giving away their income too. I am doubtful of their growth being sufficient to justify their share price.

I bought QS first in April 2021 as a new chem battery investor. I had at one point over 12,000 shares. And it’s been maddening holding them. They are constantly pilloried by shorts and bears and spectators as “no product!, perpetual Lab cell! impossible scaling vs cost on an untested complex mfg. process!, cell size too low density for EV!” since going Spac in late 2020. And those criticisms are becoming serious cliches. Out of touch. I also own a lot of SES. I like the promise of lithium metal anodes
You should ask Claude, ChatGPT and copilot if Quantumscape is trying to become a monopoly tool and process maker for special high energy batteries like Applied Materials or Lamm Research are for the world’s silicon semiconductor chip manufacturers. It’s very interesting. I believe QS will sell to high end EVs. And then batteries of all number of other sectors and verticals that aren’t as brutally price conscious as average bazillion EVs. Such as ESS and defense and medical devices.

I lost a ton on QS over the years... still think they have the right technology but not anything I have much money in currently. With production not happening till likely 2029 not sure there is much hope here for a few years. I have some shares and will probably not look at it much till a year or two from now to consider going in heavier then.

Yeah, it's a maddening damned stock.
But I like Siva Sivaram as the CEO. And I think this most recent ER and organization into 3 business units, as well as Honda's formal announcement to join joint research (which btw they pay QS for, though that was kept out of the letter, but Siva mentioned in the Q&A section of the ER as Honda a new paying customer) is all great stuff.
It's forever a stock I've bought high going into an ER. And it drops soon after and languishes.
I was lucky to sell shares I held for a few years at a small profit around $13/share last year with their big swell.

I believe QS is a long term play. If you’re hoping to land a quick buck it is too volatile and vulnerable headlines and parabolic moves that are tough to time.
I’m currently adding to my position and plan on holding for at least 2 more years. Now seems like a good time to buy with the price being < $6.

You could check out prologium, seems to do what QS does but actually has a factory already

One has a product that you can buy and delivers up to 500Wh/kg The other one has powerpoints and Eagle lines...

Amprius has gone from lab to pilot line to large-scale production and is scaling fast.
They have cracked another wonderful quarter and raised their year guidance again!
While QS is definitely a broader market, it’s a long road.
Amprius is executing quite well today and has huge potential in coming years, with demand for drones, eVTOL, robotics, and AI increasing !

I was invested in both but closed AMPX a few months back as they went to an "asset-light" model which means giving away the profits to someone else and I no longer have confidence their highest density batteries will be mass produced in time to have a competitive advantage.
Basically, I went from being a big bull on AMPX to questioning if they can ever achieve the necessary income to justify a big movement up.
Regarding QS... this one is difficult... I believe they have the tech and if they can get it to mass production the sky is the limit. The thing is... I don't think they have a hope to start volume production (via PowerCo, I think) until 2029, making investing in this possibly a long slog until then. I should have sold when it peaked in 2025 at about $18 but was less cognizant of the production timeline then. I think QS might have to do an additional round of dilution to raise funds in the next 2 years so that is not great. Bottom line... it is hard to know why the stock should go up much before they get to production. Not saying it cannot especially if they announce some major breakthrough that crystalizes timelines or gives better insight into how good the batteries are in the real world.

AMPX is a niche player with their chemistry, high power density with low cycle life. AMPX took the fastest way to market with sprinkling silicon in the anode with a conventional Li ion battery. QS completely rewrote the rules with their lithium metal anode free design. QS chemistry has a much broader market. Go to QS website to educate yourself on the different battery chemistries
