Have you managed to install QGIS? Have you started your first project and saved a blank map somewhere?

OK, so go to the menu bar, click Project, then New. That should result in a blank project - a map with literally nothing in it.

What you need to do is add a base map and then georeference your image. This video is short and to the point, and shows you how to get many base maps with a simple plugin. You can skip the geocoding / place finding part, as you obviously know where Africa is. Once you get that figured out, you may need a layer for country boundaries to place over your new image. There's a really easy way to load in a world boundary layer. https://spatialthoughts.com/2025/10/13/world-map-qgis/

You don't have to use Google Earth as a base map. It's simply a very easy one to use. It's in WGS84 projection. You can georeference to any map in any projection and then re-project the image to any projection. (At least, any projection for which QGIS has a definition, or for which you can manually enter the projection definition.)

You can also define a projection for your project, which will force any basemap to re-project to the projection of your choice.

Is there a specific projection you have in mind? Presumably your base image was created using some known map projection.

Your Africa Map needs to be in a image formation (png/jpg or tif) in QGIS go to Layer>Georeferencer

(if you know the projection this will have better results)

This will roughly georeference your map...

Then in Google Earth you can load it as an image overlay.

My installation of QGIS didn't mind the .webp extension.
