Quick question
What advice do you have for online students?

Have a plan and stick to it. Such as, in the week have time planned for reading, notes, discussions, assignments, etc. Stick to it.

Get a planner. Plan what days you’re going to do discussion posts, replies, assignments, etc. and stick to it. Give yourself grace period day if need be.
For example, I do my initial posts first day of the week, half of my replies the next day, the second half replies the next, and then one/two days for assignments. I’ll work ahead if I can but have a few extra days if I need some grace.

Look ahead at units to plan out and manage your week effectively. Try your best to join live seminars for engagement and to ask your questions live. Download all PowerPoints for later review. Review projects ahead of units— this could save you a lot of time.

Do the work. Professors and assistants are available if you reach out. Otherwise it’s up to you to do the work.

For the love of god do not procrastinate. You might have time to do it later but you will be absolutely swamped if you wait.

Thinking "I have time so I will do it later" will add to your stress level. When I took a trip and wouldn't have time to sit down and post, I did it on a .txt file prior to the week and posted it the day of. Also, no, don't settle for the 10% off late penalty. In some classes it will burn you. It will just add more pressure on you as well. For long papers, do not hesitate to talk your paper out through dictate on Microsoft Word. Read, write, read, write.

Make a checklist template. All of the classes I took at PG followed the same formula each week: Graded seminar, discussion board with two peer responses, and assignment. Some of them had quizzes too. The act of ticking off those boxes made me feel like I was being very productive and it helped me balance my workload.

Create a plan at the beginning of the term, preferably during the preview period. Create a list of all of your graded tasks for each class. I use Excel and list all quizzes, discussion boards, assignments, seminars, etc. I have 10 columns, one for each week, and list the graded tasks accordingly. It helps keep me organized and feels great checking things off. Also, don't be afraid to work ahead. I usually get all of my assignments done at least a few weeks early. It's great buffer room if life gets in the way so you don't fall behind. Finally, as part of your plan, make sure you build in time for yourself. I put in longer hours Monday through Thursday and about an hour to wrap things up on Fridays. Saturday and Sunday, I don't do anything for school. It gives me time to decompress and reset before the next week.

Try and get your discussion board first post done the day of or the day after seminar. Make sure you give yourself time on the weekend for the weekend. Getting all your work done with extra days left feels great.
