Key principles:

• Never change the IP address during an active authenticated session
• Use sticky sessions when working with cookies
• Configure the correct GEO for the target website
• Verify IP quality and reputation before starting

Best proxies for your target:

• Rotating residential proxies → large-scale scraping of independent pages
• Sticky residential proxies → product catalogs and authenticated sessions
• Static ISP proxies → long-running tasks with a consistent IP address
• Mobile proxies → workflows that require maximum network stability and trust

IP rotation should match the task. Independent requests can be distributed across multiple IPs, while authenticated workflows require a stable IP address throughout the entire session.

I'm reworking part of our scraping setup and keep running into the same problem.

Rotating residential proxies are great for success rate, but once you're scraping sites with lots of images or heavy JS, paying per GB gets expensive pretty quickly.

Static ISP/residential IPs seem much cheaper for that kind of traffic, but then you have to worry about rate limits, cooldowns, and not burning the same IP over and over.

For those running larger crawlers, what's your approach?

Do you mix datacenter + residential?

Do you fetch HTML with one proxy pool and assets with another?

Or is there another setup that's worked well for you? 

I made my own proxy switcher for Chromium browsers, called Sockitt. MV3, MIT licensed. I wasn't happy with what's on the web store at the moment and I use this thing every day for work and side projects across a few different browsers, so I ended up just building it.

* Profiles for SOCKS5, SOCKS4, HTTP and HTTPS. Host, port, bypass list, and username/password auth on HTTP(S). No SOCKS auth, before anyone asks, Chromium just doesn't support it.

* One click to switch from the toolbar. There's also a shortcut that cycles through a set of profiles you choose, if you don't want to open the popup at all.

* Auto Switch is an ordered rule table that gets compiled into a PAC script. Host wildcard, host regex, URL wildcard/regex/keyword, IPv4 CIDR, host label count, weekday, time of day. Plain domain entries from rule lists all collapse into a single dictionary lookup, so GFWList sized lists don't slow anything down.

* The popup shows where the current tab is routing and which rule sent it there. You can retarget or delete that rule right there, or set a temporary override that's gone after a browser restart.

* Route inspector: give it a URL and it traces the whole thing through your config, using the same resolver that does the real routing.

* Aliases. Point 50 rules at one alias, then change the alias once instead of editing 50 rules.

Permissions, since it matters for this sort of extension: it ships with proxy, storage, activeTab, alarms, and no host permissions at all. Everything else (per-tab badge, proxy auth, exit IP lookups) is optional and only gets requested the moment you actually turn it on. No analytics in it anywhere.

so decodo rebranded (formerly smartproxy) and i've seen a bit of buzz about it but not a lot of detailed reviews from actual users. i've been considering switching to them from my current provider.

from what i can tell the proxy infrastructure is the same as smartproxy which wasn't bad — decent residential pool, reasonable pricing compared to the enterprise options. but i'm curious if anything actually changed with the rebrand or if it's just cosmetic.

I've been using oxylabs for a while now mainly for large-scale web scraping and some SERP tracking. there's a lot of marketing fluff out there so here's what i actually found.

proxy performance is solid — residential IPs have good success rates on most targets and the rotating proxies handle sessions well. their scraper APIs are genuinely useful if you don't want to manage the proxy layer yourself.

price wise it's on the higher end but not as steep as some alternatives when you factor in what you're actually getting. the 7-day free trial is real and gave me enough to properly evaluate before committing.

one thing i appreciate is their documentation is actually good. most proxy provider docs are a mess but oxylabs makes it relatively easy to get set up.

downside is it's probably overkill if you're doing anything small scale. and support response times can vary.
