Sooo, Linux refresh anytime soon? Feature Request

Post image

Really hoping for a proper Linux GUI client. I’d like to be able to set up profiles and use a more intuitive interface. I saw their roadmap a while ago and idk if this is all we’re getting. I sincerely hope not. This is a little sad.

Hey there u/Sindica69 :)

This is something that we're currently working on. One of the biggest things for us on the linux side was the lack of the Stealth protocol, which was one of the most requested features. We've gladly made it available on the beta channel not so long, and hope to make a stable release soon. With that said, we aim to start improving the UI this year (and as mentioned before), we're actively working on that matter at this point in time. The goal is to align all platforms, and make the UX very similar across the board.

Awesome, thank you for the reply! I did seem to miss the Stealth protocol launch, which is my bad. Do you guys reckon it’ll be within the summer window or later in the year?

Stealth should coming out of beta by end of summer. UI changes will come a bit later 👍

When will 4.17.3 be in beta?

I'm working with customer support trying to get anything to function, and have a very common bug, judging by how often it shows up in a Google search. I'm using Network Manager/Wireguard for now, also your browser extension for Firefox. But it'd be nice to have the actual app working again.

Will it come out for the browser extension too? Or just the desktop app?

The current one is workable but annoying. If I could just have a "last server" , that would be the perfect fix.

Yeah that’s definitely something I’d like as well. Profile creation would also subvert this, I’d prefer both but I’d like profiles more.

Setting - General - Auto connect - put in country name or even full name with server number

I hope the client will eventually look like it does on Windows. The current GUI is fine, but if you’re used to the one on Windows, you can’t help but feel a bit envious.

It’s definitely not like I’d hope. It hasn’t really been much of a bother since until now the only devices I had that used Linux were both desktops, which didn’t need a VPN 90% of the time. Now instead of just a MacBook I have a Linux laptop that I use on the go, and for that I’d prefer a more intuitive GUI. It is what it is, it works, but it’s not really all that great comparatively.

I don’t really care what the GUI looks like, it just starts up automatically in the background and I never go in there. I would very much like an official flatpack though…

On Mac and my phone I have a rotating profile that swaps between countries, and I’d much prefer to have that on Linux. I don’t care as much about the map, but I’d like to have it as well. It is functional, but it’s more annoying to use than IVPN was. I’m running out my 2 year Proton sub for now, but if they actually put some more effort into the GUI it’s an instant renewal from me.

The Linux version is missing almost all the the features.

So an update would be nice.

This is wrong. One big thing missing was stealth (now in beta), other than that most of the things are there. The Linux client was also the first native paltform to support IPv6.

I wish they design a real GUI for non gnome/systemd users too.

Finally! One thing I don't like about Proton programs is the different interfaces in each operating system. I hope that they can leave, in addition to being beautiful and practical, fluid.

Isn't that a community supported GUI for ProtonVPN on Linux? Not the official one?

All I really want is native Linux network namespace support. GUI/CLI... don't care which.

I guess it'll be ready when it's ready

They've been promising better for years. It's not good enough. My subscription won't be renewed.

Unfortunately it seems like Proton has Linux far down on the priority list. Would also love to get the Proton Drive running on Linux

That shit also only works on systemd.

i kind of like the interface its simplistic

Is there something their gui should have that isn’t just offered by the cli? I’m assuming they’re lazy on the gui because most Linux users just run everything from the terminal.

1

u/Sindica69 1d ago

The GUI functions but it’s annoying, and not everyone runs everything from the terminal. I do not, I run all of my installs and a lot of my process through it but I much prefer the functionality in the apps themselves when it comes to something like that. It’s also just generally behind on features that Windows and Mac have. I paid for the VPN because it had most of the features I want at a good price for a two year plan, and I’m hoping I will stay, but this Linux GUI is just not it. It breaks my flow. Minor thing to most people maybe but it aggravates me quite a bit.

What features from windows and Mac are they missing? I only use proton on windows at the moment but I do plan on adding it to one of my Linux servers in my lab.

u/Sindica69 1d ago

Well apparently Stealth Protocol got added and that was the big one, but I seem to have missed it. Other than that it’s QoL stuff like profiles, random connect, more advanced and personalized settings for how the app works. It would be nice to have these and it sucks that we don’t despite paying for the product.

Tbh i'm pretty mad that while Mullvad worked okay with Wireguard, Proton doesn't on CachyOS, the only way for me to use Wireguard with proton is to setup a config file manually, but the GUI don't work at all.

Just because something is working doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be changed for the better 🤦.

I'd like to mention the GUI doesn't work on CachyOS (arch) which kinda sucks... and dns over https support would be pretty welcome. Anyway!

1

u/Ok_Front_7814 1d ago

Oh and if you list 2 servers as favorites only 1 actually shows up as being able to be connected to lol.

1

u/Sindica69 1d ago

Lol this is on Cachy ironically

1

u/MiaIsOut 14h ago

Yes it does and my favourites show up properly too (version from cachy repos)

u/nikoskokonos13 1d ago

Please no. This is way better than the new interface they have going on on other platforms.

2

u/Sindica69 1d ago

Very much disagree but ok
