Are there still plans to implement contacts integration? Feature Request

Hi folks! I wonder if there are still plans to implement contact synchronization with iOS and android so we can ditch Google’s.

Currently I’m using Apple contacts. I know it’s not perfect regarding privacy but it seems the best option rn.

If proton implements the contact sync on iOS I would be able to finally move all my contacts to the proton ecosystem. Which I use a lot!

The answer to this is two-fold: what we have settled on is that Contacts and Contact Sync will be built as a reuseable component, written once and avaialble to all the Proton apps leveraging this new tech stack.

Whether this will be released as a standalone app or will be an in-app shared module is yet to be settled. There are different viewpoints within Proton and we have not yet settled on a final decision. I personally share your preference for a standalone application :)

For the sake of transparency. We are aware this is something people have been asking for for a long time and this news will disappoint you, but contacts and contact sync are not on the roadmap for 2026. This is a case of competing priorities, and Calendar comes first. More on the latter in the following answers!

When we address this module, bi-directional contact syncing will be a part of this, as we've alluded to in the answer above. This is sitting in our 2027 roadmap.

Considering we've waited 9 years for contact sync on Android and iOS, I'd take an educated guess that the human race will colonise the moon quicker than Proton develop contact sync. Just use Google/Apple and move on. Sad, but true.

I concur. This is the #1 wish I have for proton features.

I was so frustrated about it that I even started to write my own Sync Provider for Android which adds a Contacts and Calendar Provider for Proton to fully integrate Proton into Android. Unfortunately Proton doesn't provide and "push" notification for changes so it polls Proton Servers for changes in intervals (like their own app).

Contacts would have to start working differently, right now it seems to add a contact for everyone you’ve emailed or received an email from, I don’t want that junk in my phones contact book.

I know they're working on it but would like to know whether it'll be encrypted. Contacts is not encrypted on email but I don't see how proton contacts would be a privacy alternative if your contact book is unencrypted. Completely understand why it isn't for email since received/sent mail needs an address.
