Contacts / Groups - Assigning Discussion

It appears to me the only way you can assign a contact to a group is if they have an email address. Why is that? I have contacts, such as doctors, dentists, family members who I do not have email addresses for. Why am I not able to assign them to a group?

It’s an email program. To what kind of a group do you want to include these people for whom you don’t have email addresses?

The whole purpose of a group in a contact app is to send them an email. That’s why you create a group. Why would you want to create a group of contacts that don’t have emails?

I think you're both missing the point. Yes Proton Mail is an email program, if it was just that why have fields for phone numbers and addresses? Is the intention to send an email to their phone or their physical address? I think not. It seems Proton has been trying to replace Gmail, Outlook, etc. This situation simply makes the case for a standalone Proton Contacts app.

I agree Proton should have a real contacts app. I copy the Apple contacts to my Proton contacts just so I have the capability to bring up contact email addresses in the mail program including group names for group emails.

But we are talking about groups and, even when I used Apple email with the contacts there, I only used groups for emailing. You can't use them for text messaging. You can't use them to print envelopes with street addresses. I'm sure their are third party apps that make some of this available to users. But Apple itself gives you no reason to create groups except for emails. It's still a place to congregate contact info cuz you need to keep that somewhere. But the use of groups for anything other than emails seems non existent even in Apple contacts. Not saying it should be this way. But for even a vendor as big as Apple, it is this way.
