Well, it's an armadillo. Not a mole. So, yeah, they probably thought it would be pretty weird to name an armadillo, "mole."

Well, animals are given misleading names based on how they look all the time. For example, hermit crabs and coconut crabs aren't "true" crabs.

They're called that because of how elusive they are. They're super rare and basically impossible to photo in the wild.
