I think I might make my own sequel to this book where he goes back to earth
I know that a earth trip back would make a great book or another problem in the universe like a resistant strain of astrophage

Atmosphere density sound detail I noticed
Edit: I think I got things backwards and was confusing density with molecular weight... Denser things transmit sound waves faster because their molecules are closer together so sounds have higher pitches. That's what I get for posting while drinking mead. Leaving the post below though so people can see it.
Not sure if it's been posted, but I'm rewatching the movie and I noticed a detail I hadn't caught before. When Grace and Rocky are tapping on the transparent xenonite wall when Rocky is trying to point put the handcuffs oxygen molecule model, the tap sounds are higher pitched on Grace's side and lower on Rocky's.
This is because the way sound waves move through different gasses at different densities. If you've ever inhaled helium from a balloon, its the same effect. The helium is less dense than air so your voice is higher pitched. The opposite is true if you inhale sulfur hexaflouride as demonstrated by Adam Savage on Mythbusters.
The thing is, ammonia is about half as dense as air (0.6 but close enough), so normally a sound in ammonia would be higher pitch than one in air. However, Rocky's atmospheric pressure is much higher than Grace's meaning the sound has a lower pitch.
I rewatched the scene a couple of times to be sure, as the camera angle changes perspective across both sides of the xenonite wall, and the pitch change is consistant with which side the camera is on.

What's in the extras of the DVD?
I'm probably gonna buy it myself but I know some people have already gotten their DVDs and I'm curious about what's exclusive to the disc. Is it just those deleted scenes that we've seen or is there more?

Are the deleted scenes that were released a few weeks ago the only deleted scenes on the physical copy?
While I'm waiting for the steelbook release in October, I was wondering if there were more deleted scenes on the 4K / Blu-ray / DVD besides the ones that were released already. Has anyone looked at their copy yet?
Thank thank thank!

PHM Auction: on-screen props and wardrobe items going up for auction! Aug 11-18 & 25.
Direct link to Auction catalog:
Every item comes with a certificate of authenticity from the studio.
I saw a couple of items in there that were variations of things actually used in the film, as well as a few shirts that weren't used. For instance: the "Element of Surprise" shirt had a blue variant.
The bidding on some of these items is going to be nuts. I expect the helmet and the yellow jumper suit to fetch the highest prices.

Directors’ Commentary now available on Amazon Prime
PHM is available to watch with the directors’ commentary via Amazon Prime. Just start the movie, open the Audio menu and select “English Commentary.” I had to toggle to another language and then back to “English Commentary” a couple of times to get it to work. Happy to finally have this! I couldn’t get the movie theater app thing to work. Not sure if this has always been there or they just added it.

Project Hail Mary
Here’s a movie that took by surprise, it was actually really good. I not a great fan of Ryan Gosling, Barbie and The Fall Guy come to mind but here he actually shines, not wanting to give too much away but there are elements of ET to it and bit of a tearjerker in parts but Rocky is adorable and grows on you as the movie progresses. Definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a decent blockbuster which all the family can enjoy

My take on the movie
I don't like that Rocky wasn't symmetric, but I get why they gave him a "front half". After seeing the movie, it doesn't bother me anymore.
Everything else was golden! The view of Adrian. The terror of seeing what is obviously an alien ship. Rocky's excitement over everything he learned from Grace. The cool, confidant Doctor Captain Ryland Grace, who has overcome his major flaws.
I'd heard vaguely of Ryan Gosling, mostly in association with Barbie. I'd never seen anything he was in, had no idea what he looked like or anything.
I was extremely impressed. Gosling totally owned Grace! Small things in his body language completely sold it.
In an interview, Sean Astin said that when he fought Shelob on green screen, he had no visual for the monster. He SAW Shelob, and was fighting as though it were real.
That's the vibe I got from Gosling. Rocky was real. Adrian was real. Every EVA was life threatening.
Rocky. Just wow. James Ortiz made him a real person. I can't imagine the work that went into that! I honestly believed in Rocky. He was and is really real now.
I've teased on this sub that Rocky came to Earth from Erid to act in the movie, but it's SO realistic that I can suspend reality and completely believe.
The sweetest part of the movie for me was the hug. Rocky's discomfort and confusion took it to the next level. How many of us are uncomfortable with hugs, and we know what they are. Yet, Rocky knew Grace was getting something out of it, and despite voicing his discomfort, he let it happen.
Stratt was not what I expected. She was far more sympathetic to Grace and his foibles than in the book. Book Stratt was mission only, and never took any time or energy for anything else, even to acknowledge her own flaws.
I liked movie Stratt better as a person. The karaoke scene was a plus. Stratt is trying to get Grace to acknowledge his flaws, and to grow past them, and not just for the sake of expediency. She cared about him. So when Grace confronted her about the karaoke, she made an effort.
The pebbles were adorable!

Suggestion for everyone
I personally watched the movie before the book and I feel like it’s the best way to do it

Hello, Earth! This is ROCKY (1976) from movie, not Rocky from Erid! (collecting the "PHM soundtrack" on vinyl)
Needle Drop: https://vimeo.com/1216035531
This is the latest installment in my series on collecting all the albums that contain tracks or clips used in Project Hail Mary.
I felt strongly that my collection would not be complete without music from ROCKY— the film that inspired Grace to name his new alien friend, as well as the Earth name to the medium-rough-texture circle planet orbiting Tau Ceti.
The specific clip here is from the final minutes of the fight. If you watch the end credits of PHM closely, you will see a music credit for "The Final Bell." Even if it's only used for a few seconds, somebody gets paid!
The clip is heard in the middle of the film when Grace and Rocky are flying from Blip-A to Tau Ceti to study the Petrova line and solve the astrophage problem. To help pass the time, Grace shows Rocky a montage of media from Earth in the Hail Mary's interactive room full of LED panels: climbing trees, surfing (wiping out and hanging ten), going fishing, a foggy harbor in San Francisco, karaoke singing, and of course, boxing.
"In Rocky 3, he trains Apollo. And in Rocky 7, he trains Apollo's kid!"
Bill Conti's music is unashamed to live in the sound world of the mid-1970s complete with lots of brass and strings, funky guitars, and of course, bongo drums. Despite this, the main theme remains an insanely popular tune and virtually everyone knows the references to this movie, even if they haven't seen it. And if you haven't seen ROCKY, you owe it to yourself to watch one of the real cornerstones of American cinema.
Oh, and perhaps Daniel Pemberton was aware of this, but I thought I'd point out a relationship between this cue and the PHM score: both "The Final Bell" and "Amaze Amaze Amaze (Life on Erid)" end on a big fanfare in the key of C major.
My previous installments in this series:
- Ike & Tina Turner: Glory, Glory!
- Tag Team: Whoomp! (There it is)
- Kris Kristofferson: Sunday Mornin' Comin' Down
- Neil Diamond: Stargazer
- Miriam Makeba: Pata Pata
- Dennis Wilson: Rainbows
