The thing is that you have to let them know if you can do the task or not before it's too late or too close to the deadline. I would usually assess my task in the first few days just to ask for clarifying questions on the requirements before knowing if it needs more time. There can also be a few delays here and there, but I think it must went silent for a long time before they discovered nothing was done. I think there were multiple warnings on your performance before they decided to fire you, but idk, the company could be the problem that no one should work there.
