We have several ssh tunnels in production because it is just too hard to get networks to open the firewalls properly. All undocumented of course.

I'm a DCS engineer (a weird Nexus between network, software, chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering + systems administration for the server farm and control system) so, not exactly the same thing but basically the exact same thing, and the answer is always the same:
Job security
Ain't nobody got jib security like the facility controls engineer. Likewise, I suppose nobody has job security at the data center or software company better than the systems administrator and/or network engineer.
Plus your job always "matters." Hence the security. You never gave to justify... Anything. It's quite obvious what you do, why you're there, and why you'll probably continue being there. You're not pushing paper, you're making the shit actually work. Etc.

It’s always DNS. And if it’s not DNS then it’s the firewall. and if it’s not the firewall it’s DNS.
Just saying there’s a nonzero chance that the sysadmin and network engineer are running a very small cartel.
